I am calling for an immediate and total purge... |
|
of ignore lists. I believe these are only constructive in putting known freepers on ignore for the 17.2 seconds they are alive so that we don't need to be subjected to any amount of their garbage. If a thread title bothers you, don't go in it and even hide it if need be.
If people continually put each other on ignore, this will turn into a series of parallel echo chambers and I don't think that's good for the community. Now, if someone is routinely posting what is objectively false information, that might warrant an ignore, but as we have seen in a couple of examples such routine transgressors have been banned.
Using the ignore feature because somebody in the heat of the moment said something that you found offensive once is not constructive. We should all learn to forgive. I've been guilty of putting people on ignore in the past and I think some of you know who you are from back in the 2004 campaign season, but I've come to realize most of those people I put on ignore are good and decent people and I was too thin skinned.
Please, let's try to keep all of this civil. Politics need not degenerate into a cage match. Passion need not necessitate violent confrontation. Disagreement need not lead to a total breakdown of common decency.

have their views represented by many others here in a far more civilized fashion. :)

But if I purged my list now, I wouldn't be able to stand this place. People go on my list when they repeatedly spew the same tired bullshit in thread after thread, or they say something so disgusting that I have no interest in anything they have to say ever. And it's truly sad and astounding how many that is right now.
I plan to purge after the nomination and see how many of them are actually left.

Sorry if that offends you. I don't mind if people disagree with me because I am often wrong. However, when a person takes the opportunity to be disagreeable about it, they're gone.

I really would rather keep things polite and respectful and being able to hide that particular set of threads really helps me do so.
Since I no longer have a horse in the race, it's quite relaxing.

If I don't like the way someone posts, I don't reply. If they are capable of getting over a disagreement by the next thread, so am I.
I quit posting OPs till a nominee is called, because too many people are just blasting away like Cheney at anything that moves.

15. I have a few people on my ignore list, and it took me a lot to do that |
|
Being chased around on threads where people call you all sorts of names and bring up crap constantly from the past tends to make me not want to see what they post anymore.
99.9% of the people here I can at least have a civil conversation with - but being called a child molester, et al, and having those same people jump into your threads just to berate you (when it has nothing to do at all with what is posted) is a bit much.
Ignore and hide thread can be your friend - and I hope myself that they have me on ignore as well.
I can handle arguing about things and discussing differing points of view, and learning from the views of others. But when you consistently attack me over other issues that have no relation to the discussion at hand you go bye bye.

19. I have 4 people on ignore, including one is/was a moderator who |

insisted on taking over the entire ' Latest Discussion Threads' every morning. Alerting on him didn't seem to do any good for some reason. Another is/was a sports nut who would hi-jack threads for his favorite team. Keep the sports on the playground where it belongs.
Ignore is a good thing to have. Without it, more people would be driven away.

Which is probably why I've never used the "ignore" function either.
My choice to not use "ignore" was my own, and never had anything to do with anyone else's opinion on the matter.
And I would never be so presumptuous as to "call" for my fellow DUers to behave according to MY standards.

29. They trouble me for the reasons I stated. |
|
People brag about having 50, 100, 150 people on their ignore lists. There are not that many people worth ignoring. Sure, anti-semites, racists, and other trash should be ignored, but they are usually banned. Putting people with legitimate political disagreements on ignore, which is an increasing phenomenon, is not helpful.

38. Well, here's this "should" coming from, Zynx? |
|
You seem to be setting yourself up as a sort of potential arbiter of who I should or shouldn't listen to. Thats a problematic position for you to take up, it's ME that should do that.
Why should I have to bother with people who follow me around the site with nothing more to say to me than "tard", "dumbass", "duh", "ner ner ner ner ner" and similar? You'll assume I'm ignoring their very salient points, doubtless, but actually they don't have any, and even where they do it's usually points I've considered and discarded. Its never the case that their point isn't raised elsewhere by someone with less of an attitude problem. There are disruptors everywhere and they aren't "decent people". They contribute nothing to my experience of the board.

33. I used to believe exactly the line of thought you promulgate in your post. |
|
I have been here since 2003 and never, ever put anyone on "Ignore" until about two months or so ago. It had nothing to do with "difference of opinion." And I even redacted my decision and took this person off of Ignore, but ended up putting him back on Ignore because he made it so miserable for me to be here.
In principle I agree, but in the real world, what you are suggesting is unrealistic, because some people here are sociopaths.

Of anyone on DU who disagrees with me!!!!! Get lost trolls!
But seriously, I have in my 4 or so years at DU only put one person on ignore. I understand the frustration that you feel but many people just aren't going to be as civil as you'd like them to be. The person I put on ignore was coming into my threads just to start shit, I could have posted that Bush is an asshole and this "person" would have disagreed with me. Sometimes, you just gotta shut someone up.

Funny, I guess I'm on a few people's ignore lists, myself. Not too long ago I saw a post indicating I was on ignore from a poster I actually thought I agreed with, pretty much most of the time.
Oh well. You can't please all the people, all the time, I guess.
