Supposed to get bad later this afternoon and evening.

Stay safe, and find the candles and flashlights. Got batteries for the radio?

It's rattlin the windows a touch, but it looks like your neck of the woods might get the brunt of it.

The wind warnings were for the Sacto Valley earlier today, but now they're for the southland.

How you guys doin down there?

23. SJC should be OK ... the valley is protected from the worst by the mountains
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 11:24 PM by TahitiNut
Hell... that's part of why I loved it there. When I missed the 'energy' of stormy weather, I could drive over to the coast and soak it up. The winds had to be from the south-southeast (up the valley) for it to get into the valley - for a thunderstorm, for example. I only remember about 2-3 thunderstorms in 15 years there.

During the summer, I add 5 degrees to whatever is forecast for LA and that is what we usually end up with as our high.

34. I'm there now! No rain here, but more snow than I've ever seen.
I've been at Lake Tahoe all week...we awoke to the sound of avalanche-control bombs going off this morning. It's been snowing HARD since yesterday morning, with snow warnings in effect until 10:00 tonight. They're expecting 100 mph gusts on the mountains this afternoon...so we're taking a day off from the snowboarding. But tomorrow should be pretty sick after this has all passed. Supposed to be bluebird days again. We were snowboarding in just sweatshirts at the beginning of the week, mid-fifties; by Wednesday it was starting to snow lightly; Thursday and Friday we rode all day in incredible pow, heavy snow falling both days, all day. This place is insane! Now, if only the plow would come and dig us out of here!

35. Oh Man... We Got Trapped In A Cabin For A Couple Of Days, Many Moons Ago...
It had snowed like crazy, and since the cabin was further back in a subdivision, our road was last on the list to get plowed. We were down to about three cans of Campbell's soup, and our last joint. The plows finally came, and we took off for Heavenly Valley.

Waist deep, almost Rockies type powder. I almost never skied the "Gun-Barrel" run, because usually it's all rutted out, and frozen into Sierra Cement. Not THIS day! It was one of the best powder runs in my life. I just kept smiling this big-assed smile, and whoopin and hollerin all the way down the run.

I'm big-assed smilin right now just remembering it! Thanks!!!

36. I've done some crazy sh*t this week!
Gunbarrel is awesome...but my wife freaked when I said I wanted to end my day on a double-black, so we just downloaded instead. It was like you said -- just tons of powder (Friday). I'm kinda glad I didn't, though. Still sore from a pow day at Kirkwood on Thursday, it dumped ALL day, we were afraid they'd close Carson Pass, but we made it. Barely. Sentinal Bowl, Cornice and The Wall, OMG! In this kind of powder, you can try all sorts of stuff I'd never do back home on Vermont ice. I'm letting the legs rest today, after five days in a row (Hit the Headwall and Siberia at Squaw, too). Supposed to be regular temps and partly sunny tomorrow. I'm sure there'll still be some of this stuff left.

38. One Of The Ultimate Powder Places Is Steamboat Springs Colorado...
If you've never been there, give it go. The way they've left many large trees standing but well spaced, allows for these little mini-runs. If you see tracks going off to the right of a tree, there's usually untracked mini-runs to the left of that same tree. It is wonderful for finding fresh virgin powder.

And even if people have skied through...

There was this one clearing in some Aspens at SBS, that everybody eventually had to go through on this one run. It was a small field of powdery moguls. And I got into this rhythm on it, doing these aerials and turning from mogul to mogul, that is was like jumping on a trampoline. I'd go springing off one mogul into the air, hit the trough of the next, and spring right back into the air again and again. Everybody was giggling the whole time we were doing this.

And if ya want an entire run that is a huge natural half-pipe, Jackson Hole Wyoming is the place. We saw this under one of the lifts, and I told our group to follow us. We left our poles at the top of the run, and just went from side to side of this pipe doing all sorts of aerials and tricks.

God I miss those days.

37. Rain now, fires later
This early season rain is enough to get young plant life growing, but it all dries up in the summer. It becomes the kindling that feeds the fires.

39. Ya Know... That Has Always Cracked Me Up...
Not the fires...

But like you say, during years of plenty of rain, they warn us that the under-growth will become a fire hazard later in the summer. But... if it's a year of drought, they say that it's a fire hazard in the summer.

Personally,I'll take the rain.
