"Recognizing the Real Enemy Here at Home"; Just a reminder of the type of thinking...
we are up against. Worth the read just for that, but also to caution us against the fact of how beating each other up is so counter productive. I know we have many different points of view and it is good to air our differences, but so much of the aggression against ourselves is pointless. We have a lot in common and we can leave the attacks to the other side.

Recognizing the Real Enemy Here at Home
Conservatives and the Right

So much of what I read in the so-called progressive media (including on The Smirking Chimp) gets mired in petulant screeds against the very people most likely to give us a little relief from Republican insanity. It's a tradition on the left to engage in splinter politics that have much to do with proclaiming one's moral superiority even if that exercise is divisive and destructive of the ends we might generally agree upon.

Last week, I wrote a column called Republican Nut Jobs on Parade (available here on the Chimp http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/12895). The column first appeared in the Paradise Post, a little thrice-weekly paper published in the Sierra foothills of California, a place where it's not difficult to find the kind of fascist ignorance that has delivered the nation into the hands of people like Bush and Cheney.

Last week's column prompted the responses below, offered here edited only for space or to eliminate repetition. For Chimpsters and others who like to think of themselves as progressives, it would be good to keep this strain of American opinion in mind the next time you feel like engaging in the invidious and self-defeating exercises in moral posturing seen all too often in the circle jerk of left wing dialogue. And it would be good if the people so intent on finding fault with the Democratic candidates kept in mind just how much worse it can be. It would be good if we'd start speaking out in mixed company, taking on these people wherever we find them, instead of engaging in little hair-splitting exercises with the people who generally share our views. It would be good if we fought with the bad guys instead of with the people who are mostly like us.

Let's keep our eyes on the prize. Here's the real enemy:

<<snip>>

-- "You liberals are a hoot. I would love to see youtfaces once all these feel good programs and anti American policies of your Democommunist party come to roost. Maybe then you will figure out that you should have bought more American made products, or when you Islamonazi's blow up a major American city you see that they really hate us and it is not our falt. Right, Bite my rear end you liberal pukes!!!!!!!!"

<<snip>>

-- "You couldn't possibly think that any Republican president would take a bombing campaign or an act of war with anything but the most serious regard.
Barack and Hillary both have their socialist agendas. I was just reading some of Baracks economic ideas, forced retirement plans for one. Hillary wants to the government to control the health care industry, the health care industry in this country is roughly 1/6th of the economy. Do you want the government running 1/6th of the economy. Have you been to a DMV, dealt with the IRS or INS lately? Theirs' are definitely socialist ideas."

-- "You want the government to look after you, you do not want to have to answer to a higher moral authority and on and on. Like immature children who refuse to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions. Government health care, lawsuits against MacDonalds for feeding us too much fat, government retirement plans, the list goes on and on. You want the Nanny state; you do not want to be weaned from government milk. Obamas' entire campaign is built on the platitudes of Hope, The left think that government, a socialist government, is the answer to the worlds' problems."
