http://www.atlargely.com/2008/02/the-smear-job-1.htmlThe Smear Job - Round Three - Alabama GOP Mass Meltdown...Apparently the Alabama GOP is having a massive nervous breakdown. Either the entire party is so up Karl Rove's ass that they are willing to self-destruct in order to defend him. Or, equally as disturbing, they are all equally corrupt and in defending him are defending themselves.
In one swift-boating non-stop lie-a-thon, the Rovian mechanism went splat, however, because their planted story - now being recycled - is entirely false. Please see first Scott Horton's piece at Harper's about how this magic propaganda laundry got it wrong.
After both the AP and the American Spectator laundered lies as news, the Alabama GOP then recycled their own lies in
a mass mailing earlier this evening. But I think they have really underestimated the amount of evidence there is implicating the many faces and asses of Karl Rove.
Consider for a moment that the man who ran out front to claim he has never heard of whistle-blower Dana Jill Simpson, is Toby Roth. The Spectator apparently vets their sources based on insider hand-shakes, because Roth is a lobbyist who has close ties to ALL of the key players and at least 3 of the major scandals.
When a man like Roth comes out to call someone a liar, you have to wonder just how honest his friends,
Michael Scanlon and Jack Abramoff, have been.
The Alabama GOP, not happy with recycling one set of lies, sent out a second email not even 30 minutes after the first. This email was the Eddie Curran story (
sadly now available online and ready to use for kitty litter) in the Montgomery Independent.
As with Roth, Curran has serious issues of credibility when it comes to the Siegelman case. In fact, his entire career now rests on the very notion that he was either used to launder lies or that his own lies are about to be exposed. The worry is equal also for Senator Jeff Sessions, who has a close friendship with Eddie's dad. It is possible that Curran started off as an honest, well meaning reporter.
I have certainly heard that he was at some point in his career. But whatever it was that fed his obsession - likely Karl Rove's friend Billy Canary - has made him rather insane. Simply read the attack on Horton and you will see that Curran is seething and one has to wonder why he is so overtly angry. But in the end, we already know why he is angry. If we are right, then his entire recent career is a lie and his hopes of publishing his Siegelman book look rather slim - unless Karl Rove fixes the facts around a book deal for the reporter.
Why then is the Alabama GOP sending this garbage out
in advance of the 60 Minutes piece? What is the panic here that requires them - the state party - to line up behind Rove like good little soldiers? If I were any of these people, I would have thrown turd-blossom under the bus of his own making ages ago. So what then is the Alabama GOP protecting? Moreover, what does Rove have on the state party leadership that is making them so very nervous?
So, as I was warned, the attacks have come one by one in quick succession. But they are tame really, almost idiotic - like a large clumsy elephant slowly faltering under the weight of its own history.
