Microsoft warns on Vista update (BBC) {some programs *may not work*! really!}
Microsoft is warning Windows Vista users that a forthcoming service pack for the operating system may stop some third-party programs working.

The software giant has released a list of programs that may be broken by the SP1 update for Vista.

Most of the software hit by the upgrade are security programs that prevent Windows users falling prey to viruses, trojans and booby-trapped webpages.

The Windows Vista update will be released to the public in mid-March.

3. Now that I'm hearing rave reviews about using Macs for gaming...
...I think my next system will be an iMac with Boot Camp and XP Pro. And when I'm not busy on Everquest 2, I'll actually boot into the Mac OS and play around with it.

I went out to buy a new unit, all have vista , so I gave it a try, played with it for a couple of hours, packed it up and returned it... I will stay with XP or go to Linux.

10. Friggin' garbageware
As long as XP works and Ubuntu makes progress I'll never use Vista. There is no good reason to upgrade a perfectly good XP computer to Vista.

If one buys a new computer, they should refuse the Vista license, get their money back and install Ubuntu.

11. 2nded.
I'm perfectly happy with XP. I'm willing to wait until they iron out the kinks in Vista.

Or until they release the next OS after Vista... :P

15. Microsoft's biggest problem with Windows now is that
there is very little more that can be done with Windows. For example, plug n play was a very nice and needed innovation that came about I believe in Win98 Second Edition. 32 bit processing in Win2000 was a good thing. Now, there is very little else that can be done to make Windows better. Instead, MS does crap like integrate digital right management into Windows when it isn't any of MS's damn business what you do with your multimedia or where it came from. You need a minimum 2 GB of RAM to run Vista because of all the crap that now runs in the background to police what you're doing and making sure your activated, making sure you're got the right hardware that also polices DRM and if not it will lock up.

Screw that. I've got 1Gb of RAM in this desktop I'm using while booted into Ubuntu with Compiz desktop effects enabled along with Emerald and this thing flies it's so fast. You can't do the same thing with a Vista box.

Besides, with Ubuntu, all the software's free. I designed my deck next to the pool and my sprinkler system in the backyard with a free CAD program from the Ubuntu repositories that's as good as anything I've ever seen.

16. Yeah, I can't stand programs that just try to lump extra bits of things on there
and expect it to run properly, especially when I neither need nor want those extra bits... and it's even worse when it's the OS. I refer to that as the AOL syndrome.

18. I only used AOL 2.0 through 5 or 6.something if I recall correctly..
but it seemed like every version just took the last one, lumped a few more features on, and changed the look a bit to make people think it was new. The damn thing couldn't even multi-task. If it was waiting for something to load (and this is in the age of dial-up, so that took a while), you couldn't even click on another AOL window to do something else in the meantime. I can't tell you how often I'd have solitaire or minesweeper open while I was online. Just so I'd have something else to do if it decided to be slow.

And it's not the first time.

20. It would appear that Vista is the new Windows Me.
XP is the best version of Windows, but I try not to use it because I personally find all of the Windows flavors to be user unfriendly.

Although updating any operating system does carry some risk. I once updated HAL in Mandriva Linux only to find out that the update disabled CD and DVD reading. And I swear that some XP update is responsible for the random freezes I get when I use it (although it may be a driver issue).

Hopefully the kinks are ironed out or vendor patches made available to work around the problem. IIRC XP SP2 broke a lot of programs, but the vendor patches fixed the problem.
