Here's how you can help Don Siegelman:
And I know that it humbles this proud man to have to go to friends and strangers hat in hand.

Don Siegelman
Legal Defense Fund
P.O. Box 430116
Birmingham, Alabama 35243

To all my Friends and Supporters:

Thanks so much for all you've done for me over the years. Now I must
call on you for help again.

My family and I have spent well over one million dollars on legal fees
and while we wait on the Congressional investigation to turn up
evidence of Karl Rove's involvement in my prosecution - and as we
wait on the outcome of my appeal to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals I
still have monetary legal bills to pay.

One hundred thousand dollars would get me over the hump but this
month I need checks for $5,000 to be written to each of the following
lawyers:

1. Susan James
2. Robert Blakey
3. Hirma Eastland
4. John Aaron

and $15,000 for Sam Heldman.
OR, preferred, directly to the Legal Defense fund.

Just the cost of buying a copy of my trial transcript will cost $35,000. I
have to buy the transcript in order to even be able to file my appeal
with the 11th Circuit. I have to pay the lawyers and then if the 11th
Circuit does order a new trial, I'll need another $150,000 to cover the
cost of the new trial.

So please help me and my family. If you would rather give to my
children's Educational Trust Funds just make your gift payable to Dana
Siegelman's Educational Trust or to Joseph Siegelman's Educational
Trust.

Please know I greatly appreciate your friendship and whatever amount
you are able to give or raise.

All my best -
Sincerely
Don

1. Larissa said on Thom Hartmann on Monday that "60" minutes will do a follow up on
Seigleman's plight if the public requests it.

35 grand for a transcript is absolute robbery. Shouldn't it be a matter of the public record?

4. It IS a matter of public record.
His counsel needs a hard copy, from which to work, and the court reporter only makes such when requested.

2. There seem to be a lot of dead-end links
at the site you listed there.. (Including the "contact us" page) I would only be able to contribute online

Is there any reason there isn't a link for online contributions?

7. raising money
I'm all tapped out this month, and have a lot of other upcoming expenses this month and next. I guess others are in the same boat.

DO you think the mods would let us have an auction for him on DU? Some of us have stuff that others would want. Or we could auction off services. All proceeds (after expenses like supplies and shipping costs) could go to the Siegelman fund. (If anyone knows the family, could you ask them to set up a paypal account, please?)

Examples:
- services, like technical writing, transcribing, etc.
- selling photo prints
- We all have books we don't need anymore (darn! I just donated some good ones!)
- I have plants (not practical for shipping in winter, tho')
- Bake sale!!! There are some outstanding cooks in DU
- A DU recipe books ... if you've ever been to the cooking and baking forum, you'd meet some very talented cooks there!
- virtual "birding big day" ... with bird spring migration coming up, we could sponsor the birders who will be doing their spring listings, 50c or $1 per bird species they see between Apr. 15 - May 15.

Brainstorm, people! Let's think outside the box. I'm particularly interested in buying from a bake sale. Cake, muffins, cookies .... mmmmm :)

17. usually, someone or a small group of people volunteer ....
They are amazing! It's easy enough for most of us to toss a few bucks to the cause, but the work that goes into planning, collecting money, and executing the deed is very time-consuming.

Were you around when a small group of people organized fundraising for Andy Stephenson's surgery? The outpouring of support from DU'ers was very touching. Andy was very fortunate to have such wonderful loving friends who fought so hard for him under some really difficult circumstances. They will always be my heroes ...

I'm willing to help out if someone wants to take the lead. I'm a hard worker and real good at following orders. :)
