POLITICALLY SPEAKING

Cheney is coming; so is the criticism

Vice President Dick Cheney will be in Michigan next week as the guest of honor at a private fund-raiser for U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton.

Republican supporters will pay $500 to attend the private house party in Marshall, or $1,000 for a personal photo op with Cheney.

Democrats also are pleased: They get to spend the next nine days working out on the Cheney punching bag. State Sen. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, Walberg's likely opponent, got things rolling Tuesday with a mock e-mail message from the vice president to Walberg's backers.

It contained a series of anti-Cheney missives about secret energy meetings, payoffs from Halliburton, undisclosed locations, and was signed "The REAL Commander-in-Chief." Doesn't anyone have anything new to say about Cheney? How about a shotgun joke?

Staff writers Kathleen Gray, Chris Christoff and Dawson Bell contributed to this week's Politically Speaking.

3. It's been called the Freep for a lot longer than Free Repubic has had a website.
The fellow running the editorial page, Ron Dzwonkowski, is a flaming liberal.

4. I saw that in our paper, too.
It's at a local Republican's house. So weird. It just gets weirder and weirder.
