Major new media mogul blames lousy economy on...Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton?

snip//

Or you could just jerk your knee and blame Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, two out of 100 senators who just happen to be running for president these days:

Speaking on "Squawk Box" this morning, Zell attributed much of the current economic troubles to fear-mongering and politicking by Democratic presidential contenders Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

"Obviously what we have going on is an attempt to create a self-fulfilling prophecy," said Zell, chairman of Equity Investments Group and owner of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other companies. "We have two Democratic candidates who are vying with each other to describe the economic situation worse.

"The reality is that if you live on Wall Street and you're in the credit markets the world couldn't be worse. If you're a farmer and you're getting $25 for your wheat, you're having a great time. If you're a CEO and you've got a balance sheet that's bullet-proof, you're in a great position. This whole thing is way out of control, way out of hand."

That's a new one -- it would be laughable, except we're increasingly seeing a blurring of the lines between media ownership and presidential politics. Just this week, an Alabama station owned by big backers of President Bush blacked out that "60 Minutes" broadcast critical of Karl Rove. (And remember this from 2004?) In Zell's case, he's more than entitled to his opinion, and to funnel that through the papers' editorial pages, but let's hope he doesn't emulate the more heavy-handed tactics of these other media moguls.

Because while Zell is entitled to his opinion, his opinion on politics and the U.S.economy is, as he would say, "pretty &%$#@ stupid."

1. I never stop being amazed
at how members of and supporters of the party of responsibility never take responsibility for anything.

6. Not the first time.
I seem to remember a lot of media nonsense directed at */Cheney in fall 2000 and the first third of 2001, talk of "talking down the economy".

Here's one reference to it, with the Clinton/Gore WH having a minor fit over what Cheney said, citing the WH's predictions of no recession in 2001: http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/12/04/whitehouse.cheney/index.html

*/Cheney/GOP-folk said it was just talking common sense; many Clinton and Gore supporters said it was economic sabotage.

Flip the administrations, flip the parties involved, flip the rhetoric.

I thought the claim was 95% stupid in 2000/2001, and think it's stupid now. It goes to consumer confidence, but not a heck of a whole lot more.
