WATERBURY, Conn. - A gunman opened fire at a bank Wednesday, wounding one person before fleeing, police said. Eight schools were locked down while police searched for the suspect, and a car crash that happened minutes later was believed to be connected to the robbery.

Police had one person in custody and were searching for another. It wasn’t clear if any money was taken, authorities said.

Police identified the shooting victim as Felix Sambuco, a 22-year veteran and battalion chief of the Waterbury Fire Department. He was shot in the right leg and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, NBC affiliate WVIT reported.

1. I think because they locked down the schools.
It seems that whenever kids are at risk, or perceived risk, they like to report on it.

2. To frighten everyone???or what??????
Schools get locked down across this country every day. Lots of reasons.. Yet this was a national story. I don't know. Seems average stuff to me. Hell, with the economy going down, bank robberies always increase..Oh well...

3. it's not average
this is not an average bank robbery, as you put it.

the gunman opened fire on a person in the bank

that's actually an unusual bank robbery

it's certainly not a BIG story, but claiming it is an average bank robbery, ignores the statistical fact that the gunman shooting a bank customer ( i am assuming sambuco was a customer inside the bank) or anybody for that matter is unusual.

it's about 2 % or one out of 50 bank robberies that involve any shooting.
