Poll question: DU Friends: Fighting Apathy. What is the Most Worthwhile Way you can think of to Devote your Lives: |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 08:16 PM by Mike03
Even if, like me, you can't do "anything" you dream of doing, what do you think is most worth doing, or attempting to do?
As far as I'm concerned, this is really the ultimate question. Life is damned short. Others probably feel this way as well.
Even though this is a poll, the choices are really intended to be just the tip of the iceberg. Please disregard the choices if they do not apply to your value system and tell me what you would REALLY do. No holds barred. Please feel free to speak from the depths of your soul on this. It could really help not just me but others too in similar situations.
And thank you for participating in this poll. It means a lot.

Go forth and spread happiness and prosper.
Be kind, caring and never vain.
Make music and share the joy!
Be respectful and polite. (Honey catches more bee's)
Never strike a person in anger and never strike a woman, period.
Strive to be happy and if you can help a fellow human being along the way, do so.
And don't ever forget your Mom on Mother's Day! :P

3. Why is building a house not "for the benefit of your fellow human beings"? |
|
Why is not repairing cars so that people can get to work to feed their families? Why is not teaching?
I see the moral purpose in most choices of honest activity.
Me, I'd buy a business which is poorly run, expand it and when I die, leave the proceeds to a foundation dedicated to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

who don't have kids and probably don't have much money. I want to take over a farm. I'm thinking that the place could sustain itself: private spaces and shared spaces, and public spaces. Organic food grown on-site. Studios for classes and projects, galleries and stages for shows and excercise classes! It'll keep my people healthy and connected to the youth in the area. We'll put on a day camp in the summertime, festivals in the fall, and concerts in the winter.

10. There are alot of things I wish I could do |
|
Most of all bring reality to the table where people can be helped and not ignored and to get rid of the idea of progress , to change what it means from a rush to an end to a thinking process in the present .
Stop reproducing adding to the population and make life come down from a boil over . each has what they need and everyone is respected for what part they play in society so there is a reason to go on .

11. There's A Little Overlap In The Choices |
|
I've done much volunteer work over the course of my lifetime, but I don't think I'm going to do what I feel is my "real work" in the sense your poll suggest until I well and truly feel I'm retired.
My ambitions are modest, and dependent upon how my health holds up in future. I either want to cook in or grow food for (like run a community garden) a non-profit agency that feeds the hungry/homeless or help build or acquire/arrange housing for the homeless. And then, maybe write about it.
I consider it my spiritual obligation to do this out of appreciation for the blessings I have received, but helping people in similar ways has always just made me...happy.

13. work for protecting the environment; animal welfare |
|
I've done the first one mostly indirectly so far in life through jobs, want to work more directly somehow; for the second I've done volunteer work as time and energy allows, have often thought of turning my life to it.
Kind of wish I had a lucrative career so I could support pet causes instead of the moderate income I have now (not that I'm complaining).
