Kimmel is f*king Ben Affleck -- and gays everywhere.
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 08:54 PM by pnwmom
I loved Sarah Silverman's video, so I was prepared to enjoy Kimmel's response. Unfortunately, though some aspects (taking off on her humor) were funny, I ended up feeling more and more uneasy as I watched it. And it turns out I'm not the only one.

If you think the writer below is too sensitive, then ask yourself this: would it be funny to watch white actors put on blackface and make jokes about water-melon eating? If not, then why is it funny to watch straight actors ridiculing the idea of being gay?

I'm not linking to it, because I'd rather not spread it around further. But anyone who wants to view it can go to youtube and search for Kimmel + Affleck.

http://www.236.com/blog/w/jim_david/jimmy_kimmel_is_fking_ben_affl_4766.php

"Frst, Sarah Silverman made a hilarious music video for boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel called "I'm F***ing Matt Damon." Then Kimmel countered with a response called "I'm F***ing Ben Affleck," which upped the ante and became a "We Are The World" spoof, complete with cameos by Brad Pitt, Robin Williams, Josh Groban, Cameron Diaz, Huey Lewis, and many more. Both videos became huge YouTube hits.

"All the guest celebrities Kimmel gathered to sing an idiotic and obscene song is indeed a scream. And the very idea that Kimmel and Affleck are lovers is just a thigh slapping laugh riot. Everyone knows these two are as straight as John Wayne at a Texas barbecue, and most of America still thinks that two guys in love is a total joke.

"Kimmel and his writers, rested from being on strike, show their rejuvenated creativity by hauling out 25-year-old flaming fag stereotypes. They know a couple of certifiably straight stars pretending to be big queens will have them rolling in the aisles. So, they open with Kimmel and Affleck in an open-air bar populated by a shirtless West Hollywood harem. They stand at a bar with a blender and glass of what looks like a strawberry daiquiri, and on the bar sits a large bowl of fruit. Get it? Fruit. Get it? They're FRUITS. Get it?

"Affleck is wearing a tight green shiny spandex T-shirt, and Kimmel wears a leopard print scarf and what looks like a flesh colored body stocking displaying his prominent nipples. Then, we switch to a scene with the two on a bed wearing matching robes, and Ben is styling Jimmy's hair with a blow dryer. (Get it? Blowjob.) Then, Ben paints Jimmy's toenails. Everybody knows fags like to paint their toenails."

59. I thought it was absolutely hilarious.
And I don't think the black face analogy is a fair one. Straight actors play gay characters all the time and vice versa, yet it would still be offensive if a black man was portrayed by a white man in black face. There was nothing in that video that I think was really offensive. I think it could be comparable to a gay man joking about having sex with a woman. It's funny because it's out of character, not because they're denigrating being gay.

9. I laughed, and so did my partner. I can see it causing some discomfort - but I think the thing
about these humor bits is that it always depends on both who's doing it and who's the audience.

I can think of many jokes that when told among other gays is funny, but if I heard a homophobesay the same would be offensive.

11. I don't think any of the actors involved in this are homophobes,
so I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.

My first reaction to the video was that it was obvious parody, and the people involved had good intentions.

Still . . . I'm thinking about the broader audience that is watching it on youtube -- plenty of homophobes in there. Is it helpful to fuel their stereotypes, even with obvious parody?

This is the straight man's view of what we are. I wouldn't picket Kimmel's studio over it, but I do think it was a cheap stereotype-fest.

We used to joke that we'd end up on Oprah. But we realized that we were way too boring for that, despite the unusual configuration.

So yeah - most of us are invisible because we don't conform to easy stereotypes. At least not on a daily basis.

So none of that ever happens in the gay community? I work in an area of my town near the entertainment district which has several gay bars and the posters they hang in the windows make the Kimmel video look tame in comparison but perhaps you don't go to gay bars.

87. I don't really agree.
I don't really agree with you that no other aspect of the gay community is portrayed in the media. I can think of several shows that are hardly stereotypical but that's not my point. Kimmel was trying to be funny. That's what he does. What is funny about being "happily partnered for 22 years & boring as hell." I am deeply respectful of your long relationship but it doesn't sound particularly entertaining for a TV skit. The thread sounds maybe a bit too sensitive to me but you're entitled to your opinion.

32. It reminded me of the scene in Ace Ventura
Ace realizes the woman he smooched was actually a man, and he of course overreacts...using a plunger on his mouth, torching his clothes, squeezing an entire tube of toothpaste in his mouth.

The hyperbole is SO overdone that you have to realize he's satirizing that very overreaction from homophobes.

On the other hand, as a poster mentioned upthread, people seeing Jim Carrey in that scene may get the entirely wrong message from it. Is it humor, or is it yet another negative media portrayal?

I didn't see the parody as a commentary on homosexuality. The humor came from the absurd notion that unattractive and doughy Kimmel could be paired with a hottie like Afflack. Afflack's shiny shirt and Kimmel's bare chest just accentuated that point, imho.

in the media?

It seems to me that gays are just fine with the MSM, and an increasing number of Americans, as long as they're cute/silly, dressed well, funny, and . . . harmless.

Does the media have to portray the silly side all the time so that people aren't afraid of them? Or what's up with that? Because the gay men I know through my dad aren't anything like the ones I usually see depicted on TV.

44. Well, Kimmel does racist Mexican jokes every night.
You ever see his "parking lot attendant" Guiermo? If I were Hispanic, I'd organize a picket of the show just for those stale, unfunny jokes played with his character. It makes the stuff done on Amos 'n' Andy look tasteful by comparison.

Kimmel claims those jokes are fair game because he has some Mexican heritage. That reminds me of Martin Mull praising Paul Rodriguez for "tapping the wellspring of comedy by making fun of one's own people, making him the envy of every non-Mexican comic. I wish I could get away with telling jokes like...how does a Mexican know he's hungry? His ass stops burning...but that's your territory, Paul, I won't step in it."

So if he does that to people he's related to, why should Kimmel hesitate to make stupid and inappropriate gay jokes?

And since he used the F Word a thousand times in that video/song, bleeping it but making it clear what word it is, he should have called down the wrath of the FCC, if not ABC Standards and Practices.

Don't hate Kimmel because he's racist, sexist and foul-mouthed. Those are all symptoms of something far worse. Jimmy Kimmel is a hack comic.

But then, watching Kimmel's show is L all by itself.

I just think that Kimmel has that fratboy sense of invulnerability and lack of responsibility that's behind a lot of bad comedy. This video of his sticks a toe over the line. If he keeps it up, somebody - probably the FCC while Bush still runs it - is going to chop off his whole foot.

when my son, a Marine, was first sent overseas after completing infantry training, Joan Jett and her band performed at his base in Okinawa. He said Joan played on an outdoor stage for over 3 hours in the broiling sun. When finished, she and the band stayed for another hour to talk to the Marines. Plus, my son said "she's in really good shape, Mom. And she's YOUR age!"

The Man Show wasn't all that bad IMO.. some parts of it were funny. The hot stripper chicks thrown in for good measure - well guess what.. it's a GUYS show. I just roll my eyes at parts of it, but if you spend your whole life getting worked up over this kind of crap, you're just shorting yourself.

82. I'm glad that there is another female who agrees with me!
I was afraid that I'd be denounced as a closet Republican for not hating The Man Show! :)

52. I would've been more offended if everyone in the video had acted disgusted.
Instead, they all acted like a relationship between two guys was totally normal. Which it is. Ben wasn't all grossed out, and no one acted like anything was wrong. Yeah, they went for some easy jokes, but I thought it was more in response to the easy jokes that Sarah and Matt did in their video (the red lit bar thing, the refrain of all the places they'd had sex, etc.).

It's a song celebrating the love between two men. Is that a horribly wrong thing?

53. Good point. Me, too.
And no, my gay father taught me it wasn't a "horribly wrong thing."

54. I'll take any portrayal that shows LBGT love as normal.
Though, it would've been better if Ben had taken off that hideous shirt. ;)

shirtless.

The whole thing with gays and clothes, I've never related to. My father had the fashion sense of a turtle, and his partner isn't any better.

61. It is an odd stereotype.
When I think of all my GLBT friends, they just seem like all of my other friends--some were great fashion mavens, others wore the same basics day in, day out. That's the thing I keep trying to tell my kids--people are people, the same underneath it all the world over.

62. I saw it and laughed my ass off. Have gay relatives and friends and they laughed too. Why can't
folks lighten up a little? I don't get offended at "aging" jokes, I laugh with them. Don't get offended at "Irish drunk" jokes, even though I'm Irish.

We're becoming a nation of people with zero sense of humor. This is a talk show with emphasis on comedy. Late at night. If you don't like it, make sure not to tune in again. Period. End of story. Flame away.

65. Why am I not surprised these two assholes are dating
As far as I'm concerned, Sarah Silverpig and Jimmy Kibble deserve each other. Two unfunny hacks who have to rely on shocking/offending people because they're incapable of real humor.

They can't even get their shock schtick right. The ghost of Bill Hicks needs to school these clowns.

Unfunny fucks.

Although I did laugh at the videos, and Sarah Silverman's Arsitocrats is not terrible. It's not as good as Bob Saget's but it's not terrible.

70. It's wrong
"If you think the writer below is too sensitive, then ask yourself this: would it be funny to watch white actors put on blackface and make jokes about water-melon eating? If not, then why is it funny to watch straight actors ridiculing the idea of being gay?"

No, that would be offensive and an uproar would ensue. But for other groups (such as homosexuals) it is perfectly acceptable. :banghead:

72. I didn't notice anything that offended me.
Predicated as it was on the Silverman-Damon video, it just seemed like the perfect topper, employing Affleck only because of his association with Damon.

But I try not to tell anyone else what shouldn't offend.

75. Two of my girlfriends are lesbians... they both thought
It was funny as hell. But, they're also voting for Obama and aren't on the McClurkin hate bandwagon - so it's possible they take this (and a lot of other things) with a grain of salt that some people can't do.

As one of them said.. half of the gay and lesbian people we know sit around waiting for something to get offended by.. we just let it go.

Note- my lesbian friend Kel said that, not me.

78. It somewhat reminds me of the Wayne Brady / Dave Chappell Skit..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH8OsmFT9Dw

I realize that Wayne & Dave really ARE black, so perhaps parodying blacks as "sterotypical" is OK if you're black.. and Afflack & Kimmel would only be able to get away with this if they WERE Gay..

But to me, it's the same thing. No one was trying to harm anyone with sterotypes.. if anything they just showed how rediculous they were. Same with this video.. and frankly, I think both are funny.

But, i'm a straight white female, so i'm sure i'm not even allowed to have an opinion or think this is at all funny - it's against the rules, and i obviously hate homosexuals by admitting this. :eyes:

81. and Ben is styling Jimmy's hair with a blow dryer. (Get it? Blowjob.)
So THAT's what that meant! I seriously didn't even think of THAT!! :silly:

I thought the skit was 'sort of funny' but I think I did groan a bit too.

I can't stand Kimmel anyway and rarely watch his 'show'. He's a sexist pig.

I liked Silverman's video though! That was a hoot! :P
