Meatout Mondays: Who's In?
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 12:02 AM by K8-EEE
Calling all you carnivores and omnivores and just everybody!

In the crap BushCo economy, plant-based meals make more sense than ever. Why not commit to one day a week of animal-free meals? It's a great idea especially if you have a farmer's market you can go to on Sunday to set up with.

1. Actually no meat 6 out of 7
I gotta accommodate the family a little, but meat is slowly going bye-bye.

51. 3 out of 7 for me, and the meat is usually chicken or fish
But looking to plants for protein will get pricey too. Food going into gas tanks is raising costs as is the high cost of diesel which is needed to plant, harvest, transport those plant based foods. I recommend planting whatever you can locally, community gardens to supplement diet and teach youngsters how to grow food.

Learn to preserve foods too. It will be a handy skill sooner than most people realize.

3. I'm in--I already try at least one or two times a week.
I'll step it up to three and try really hard for four times a week. (We have one family member who eats ONLY meat--he rarely helps himself to a serving of vegetables. He'll starve if we get too stringent! And, I refuse to be a short-order cook. I have my menu planned and that is what is served. No special orders allowed!)

24. I'm vegetarian and I'm with an omnivore
I either eat the non-meat components of the meal, or prepare something (such as spaghetti, stir-fry, tacos etc.) that is meatless/has a faux-meat in it. Nowadays many of the meat substitutes/faux-meats are very realistic and particularly if you have them in a dish it's hard to tell the difference.

29. There are a lot of possibilities
Chili can easily be made without meat, and I regularly make veggie lasagna (use half/half tofu and ricotta for added protein.) Depending on how strict you make meatless, have grilled cheese or do an egg scramble and veggie hash (potatoes fried up with onion, mushrooms, sweet peppers and whatever else you have in the fridge.) When I was a kid, pancake dinners were not unusual when the food budget was tight. If nothing else, try soup and sandwiches: who could say no to a bowl of tomato soup and a PB & J sandwich on toast?

You saute the fake meat.
add cumin and chili powder
add three cups cooked brown rice.

In a bowl mix 6 cups romaine
3 cups chopped tomatoes
chopped purple onion, small

Dressing:
2/3 cups sour cream
chili powder
cumin
I add a dash of Cayenne pepper.

Mix the lettuce and chopped veggies with the dressing.
Divide into 6 bowls or 6 flour bowls.
Put a ladle full of the meat and rice mix on top of each.
Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top.
This is so delicious.

25. My meatless days are random, not planned,
and I'm doing more than usual anyway right now. At least, I am if eggs don't count as "meat;" my hens are laying 5-8 eggs a day, and I don't like to see them go to waste. As a matter of fact, those eggs account for some of the increase in meatless days; with that much animal protein available, meat is generally only happening when I use a chicken breast while making a big pot of soup.

28. I wish I had some laying hens
One summer while in college, I lived with a family that had a small flock (with a rooster; apparently fertile eggs sold for more at the local co-op.) The difference between fresh layed and something bought from a store was amazing.

Alas, my 4th story apartment doesn't have enough room.

69. I think you're out of luck in the apartment, lol.
The last time I lived in town, I had a charming, if "rustic" little cottage on a little lot. The entire perimeter was fenced, and I had 4 hens that free-ranged throughout the yard along with my dog and the cats. That little yard also had a grape arbor, an herb garden, lots of roses, and some fruit trees. The hens roosted in a little tool shed behind the house.

I guess you need a friend with a little yard to keep some hens and share out the wealth. ;)

68. I have 10 hens of various ages
and breeds. One rooster, plus 3 cockerels ready for the pot.

They free range around my 6 acres. Spring to fall, they don't eat much from the feeder. They find plenty of weed seeds, weeds, and bugs to sustain them. During the winter, they eat quite a bit more.

Spring to fall, I feed them a little scratch, tossed over particular spots I want weeded, lol. Through the cold months I feed them game bird pellets; it's higher protein than regular lay pellets for hens, and it seems to help them lay more during the winter.

There's a couple of pictures posted here:

37. Um, that's what we're doing for Lent. Does that count?
Eastern Orthodox Lent starts soon. This Sunday's Meatfare Sunday, if I remember right (the last Sunday we eat meat until Easter), with Cheesefare Sunday next week (the last Sunday for dairy products).

Since we have younger kids, we're just doing Lenten fasting on Mondays (for the angels), Wednesdays (for His betrayal), and Fridays (for His death). In a couple of years, they'll be able to do Lenten fasting for all of Lent (no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish, no loud music or parties, stuff like that).

We're following Michael Pollan's advice -

Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.

We only eat meat about 3 to 4 times a week.

And for those who don't eat meat - remember - bacon IS the gateway protein so be careful out there.
