Subject: Pete Seeger TV retrospective
I just watched the really well done piece on Pete Seeger on Public Broadcasting's American Masters series. I was very impressed and moved by it. I am sure they will be repeating this piece a number of times and I urge everyone to try and watch it. For those in the Boston area, it will repeat at 9:30 PM, Friday, on Channel 44.
This irrepressible singer is inspiring. Irrepressible is a good word as he suffered years of network and other venue blacklisting as well as being a continual target of the FBI. Through it all, his ideas and the music he sang blossomed into a movement, musically and politically. I was affected by the piece about the Vietnam veteran who came to one of concerts with plans of killing him afterwards. He had a change of heart as he sat through and experienced the concert.
Banned from commercial television for 17 years, he did manage to get a program on to public television, Rainbow Quest. With a budget of $50 for each performer he had on, he put this incredible program on with really historical performances. This one by Buffy Saint Marie makes my hair stand on end.
