CAPITOL HILL (AP) -
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid vows to continue trying to end the Iraq war
even though he lacks the votes to force a troop withdrawal. After two days of discussion, Democrats have been forced to shelve proposals by
Senator Russ Feingold that would have cut off money for combat and demanded a new
strategy for defeating al-Qaida.
Republicans refused to advance the bill, and a final vote was not cast on either measure.
Reid says the Senate will debate this spring whether to approve an additional $100
billion for the war. He says the Senate will also consider legislation to rein in
contractor abuse.Senate Democrats are planning to meet next Wednesday to discuss their strategy on the war issue.
