Randi Rhodes ship hits iceberg???
Edited on Fri Feb-29-08 04:49 PM by Cyrano
I lost a "friend" today.

Randi is currently on a cruise someplace off the coast of Mexico. Some DUers and many others have gone on this cruise with either the hope of meeting her, or just to have a good time and relax.

Earlier today, I was on the phone with a Republican "friend" who said, and this is a direct quote, "I hope the ship hits an iceberg and drowns the c**t.

It was at that point that I went totally bugshit. I know (hope) that this person didn't mean it literally given how many people would have died had such a disaster occurred.

Nonetheless, this is such an Ann Coulter-like statement as to be unforgivable.

Aside from the fact that there are no icebergs off the coast of Mexico, how many people really would state their desire for the death of someone with whom they politically disagree?

After informing this former "friend" that he was a screaming asshole, I got to say, "My hope is that you are eventually devoured by your own bile." I then told him that this was our final conversation.

(My other hope is that Bush/Cheney don't get a transcript of this conversation as they will probably move heaven and earth to get an iceberg into the ship's path.)

As much as we hate the positions, opinions, "values," and other bullshit that the wingnuts throw at us, I doubt we can ever come close to matching the venom and hatred for us they carry around with them every moment of every day.

When we win the upcoming election, can you imagine what the next four or eight years will be like? In some ways, I think Obama is dreaming if he thinks he can really "bring us together." I can only hope I'm wrong.

2. Obama thinks you can negotiate with evil rat bastards.
He is mistaken.

The evil rat bastards will stop at nothing. They have no conscience, and no shame.

Obama is naive.

5. I don't think he's THAT naieve.
He is a shrewd politician and he's run a brilliant campaign. I think the way he's spent his life (working at jobs that didn't pay a lot but that helped underprivileged people) shows that he's always been on the side of the "little guy" and I'd hope that, despite the kumbaya rhetoric of his campaign, he wouldn't park his principles at the door to the Oval Office.

8. I think he may be.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday he would be more willing than Hillary Rodham Clinton to work with Republicans.

"Her natural inclination is to draw a picture of Republicans as people who need to be crushed and defeated," Obama said during a telephone interview from Texas with the Cincinnati Enquirer editorial board. "It's not entirely her fault. She's been the target of some unfair attacks in the past."

"I'm not a person who believes any one party has a monopoly on wisdom," Obama said.

14. I agree with him -- there are SOME Republicans worth working with
like Chuck Hagel and Olympia Snowe ... and others. The "old-school" Republicans who aren't necessarily fundies, who still believe in separation of church and state, who don't demonize their opponents, who weren't part of the Newt Ginggrinch era, those are the kind of Republicans I'd hope Obama would reach out to and try and find common ground with.

I'd almost fear a sell-out by HRC more than Obama. She co-sponsored an anti-flag-burning bill a few years ago with someone (was it Tom Coburn?) who was part of the Ginggrinch crowd and at a faith forum during this campaign, she made overtures toward fundies about abortion (saying she thought they might be able to find some accommmodation). My feeling is there are some Republicans you can work with and trust and there are others you don't want to go near -- I trust Obama more than HRC to know which are which.

3. I was recently heard saying Karl Rove has to be (something bad)
And I am the most peace loving, non violent, turn the other cheek person you'll ever meet. Everyone is capable of saying horrible things. Is your friend truly without any merit or redeemable qualities?

10. It wasn't our first political conversation. However, given the content, it was our last.

6. Maybe he does realize that he may not
bring all of us together.

Maybe, he feels that he MUST try in the interest of healing and repairing this country.

What say you?

11. Hell, there's plenty of bile right here that DUers
fling at each other.

In response to a thread I started yesterday, I was berated as an "idiot," and that thread wasn't even about the election. It was about a survey I had received in the mail.

If the people on this board can't remain civil and treat each other with respect, there's no hope at all in the larger non-DU world.

13. My reaction to this "friend" was not based on this one conversation.
All I can say is that, after many past discussions, this was a final straw.
