Ship Built With WTC Steel Christened
Ship Built With WTC Steel Christened

AVONDALE, La. (AP) - The USS New York, an amphibious assault ship built with scrap steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center, was christened Saturday as a source of strength and inspiration for the nation.

The bow stem, which contains 7.5 tons of steel from the site, bore a shield with two gray bars to symbolize the twin towers and a banner over that declaring "Never Forget," a slogan among New Yorkers.

{snip}

That it could be used in war did not bother Lee Ielpi, president of the September 11th Families' Association, whose son, Jonathan, a firefighter, died in the attacks. The ship won't be used for war "unless you bother us," he said in an interview.

"We're sending a message that we're standing strong," he said, adding: "This ship, as it cuts through the water, is going to send a ripple. That ripple will say, 'We cherish our freedom.'"

Rep. Vito Fossella, R-N.Y., said Sept. 11 was a turning point in the nation, and will never be forgotten because remnants of the disaster are part of the ship.

"If the USS New York has to follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell, PCO Jones and his crew ... have my full support," he said to a standing ovation.

1. scrap steel from the EVIDENCE of the World Trade Center
remember how fast they moved it away from a crime scene no less?

I hold no ill will towards the sailors that will man her, and good seas and following winds, but the fact they moved the evidence away so fast...

2. How are they gonna prove that it was 8000 gallons or pounds or whatever of
flaming jet fuel running down the elevator shafts to the 7th sub basement and burning so hot that it melted all the support columns and that caused both building to collapse? It is almost like someone is trying to hide something. :eyes:

11. Yeah, and? What does that have to do with an impossibility?
There is no way enough burning jet fuel could get to the bottom sub basement and do any real structural damage. To say nothing about not being enough air at the bottom of the elevator shafts to burn much of anything.

If you believe it could, I have access to a bridge kit in Minnesota I would like to sell you.

3. If I was a sailor, I'd quit before I went to sea on that ship.
A ship with a curse.

9. Steel is heavily recycled.
Its entirely possible that any ship built today (and many other products) contains steel that was linked to someone's horrible death in the past.

12. oh, well, thanks for being the voice of reason here.
this ship didn't "contain" steel "linked" "to someone's horrible death"--it was purposefully built with it, and named after it.

And as I said, your car could have steel made from an iron axe used to butcher women and children on a viking raid. In the end though, it's still just steel that was melted, cast and welded into place. I think they should have avoided the symbolism, but oh well.

I'd be far more scared about the screw-up during the Christening than the symbolism of the steel in the bow.

8. Hmmmm...let me take a wild guess here:
Was it renamed the USS Giuliani 911?
You know, "as a source of strength and inspiration for the nation."

"If the USS New York has to follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell, PCO Jones and his crew ... have my full support." (as long as I, nor any of my family members, or friends and family of my fellow Republics are on board)

16. LPD 20
9+11=? You guessed it.

Anyways, 7.5 tons isn't that much of a ship (maybe an anchor's worth). Here's some specs on the class of ship (full load displacement: 25,000 tons): http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/lpd-17.htm
