McCain involvement in Boeing air tanker loss (American Jobs)
According to Jeff Mapes, The Oregonian March 01, 2008
http://blog.oregonlive.com/mapesonpolitics/2008/03/mccain_blamed_for_boeing_air_t.html :

"The Pentagon's announcement that Boeing has lost a $40 billion tanker contract
to a European-American consortium could have a major impact on Ariz. Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign..."

"It was McCain who cried foul when the Department of Defense awarded Boeing
the tanker contract back in 2003. According to the Everett Herald, McCain
"nearly single-handedly killed the firm's multi-billion dollar deal" to lease 100 Boeing air tankers."

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2002130791_mccain26m.html:

"And he's far from finished. McCain is about to assume the chairmanship of the
Airland Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
with direct oversight over the Air Force, Boeing's biggest customer.

McCain plans to celebrate by holding hearings on the tanker issue and the
"Iron Triangle" of the Defense Department, Congress and industry.

Since late 2001, when he spotted a $26 billion contract for leasing tankers in a footnote
in the federal budget, McCain and his two aides have outmaneuvered Air Force brass and
Boeing's 35-person Washington lobbying operation in a classic Washington power play and a media blitz worthy of Madison Avenue."
