Just why now should the President of the United States
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 06:08 PM by RC
be the most powerful person in the world?

Now matter who it is, they should only be the head of this nation, period.
I have just stated the root of the worlds problems. The U.S. should be just another country among countries.

Just think how much better off everyone everywhere would be if we would not, could not bully most everyone else to do our bidding.

Our enemies? We made them. Each and every one.

Look at canada as an example of what I am talking about. They are at peace.

1. Tell that to the Canadian soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. And read a newspaper
once in a while, would you?

Your post was nice from a fantasy standpoint, but unbelievably naive in a real-world sense.

5. Would those Canadian solders even be in Afghanistan if we weren't so belligerent to the world?
I think not. Remember 9/11 was blow back. The wars were bu$h wars of choice. A country did not attack us, a group of people did. It should have been a police action as was the first attack on the WTC. You remember how that turned out?

12. The US may be the most powerful nation in the world, but that
does not mean the POTUS should be the most powerful person. Isn't *s attempt to be so what we spend a lot of time complaining about on DU?

2. Our economy gives our President that stature.

We have the means to project force to any part of the globe.

We have the financial markets of New York/Chicago.

We have the most visible export, Hollywood.

We have a very strong agricultural system that trades globally.

Etc. We are watched by the world because we can ruin another country economically or physically.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that we have a unique set of resources that the rest of the world has to consider.

6. No, our military gives us that stature.
Our military back ups the rest of your list.

3. actually canada has alot of issues
its immigration policy in regards to higher education is causing alot of immigrants trouble, with cronyism and corruption steadily mirroring americas own political problems. granted Canada is a haven compared to america at this point. But it is far from paradise.

7. I said they are at peace. I never said they were a paradise.
I've been there. I know Canadians. I've been in their homes. I am more impressed with Canada than the way we handle most things here.

4. Then somebody else would be the bully
haven't read much history, have we? Here's a newsflash - bad things have been happening in the world for thousands of years. We are merely the latest in a long line of superpowers.

8. This country from before its conception has a long record of
not treating others with any respect. The genocide of our own native population is an example.

13. This country was a collection of colonies before it was conceived.
Also this country has a record going back many thousands of years befor it was the "United States" without a white man in sight.

11. Not only that, the POTUS is the head of one of three branches
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 08:04 PM by treestar
Congress and the Courts should each be considered equally powerful.

And not only that, the states have some power - there are areas the federal government is supposed to stay out of.

14. No, he is not. The POTUS is ONE of the three branches.
The President is co-equal with the Congress and the Supreme Court. The check and balances come from each having different powers and responsibilities.

The problems we have now is because bu$h thinks he is in charge of the other two branches.
