Wow, this storm snuck up on me--
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 09:18 PM by fifthgendem
I was in the kitchen and had a DVD on, hadn't listened to the weather all day. I even missed the first siren when it went off. I should have known something like this would happen with the predicted drop in temps tonight--it's supposed to snow tomorrow, and it was 71 today.

The worst seems to have passed my area (north of downtown), no tornados touched down, but we have been hammered with rain, hail, wind, and lightening. Rain has almost stopped, but some areas are without power right now. Whew . . . .

11. It will reach us in the middle of the night , no doubt
It's 8:30 here (near Branson) and still at 65 degrees and tomorrow we're supposed to get a potential foot of snow.

I'm watching that line of storms and how it progresses.

3. uhh, a tornado warning does NOT meant that there is a tornado
It used to mean that a tornado had been spotted, but not anymore. They're ALWAYS calling warnings, and tornados rarely result. The TV stations get all whipped up into a frenzy every time there's a freakin' thunderstorm. It's pathetic...

6. No, you are very and dangerously WRONG
A -warning- means a tornado has been detected either visually or by radar. Please do not spread this kind of misinformation.

8. NWS gives these definitions for watch and warning...Warning means indicated, watch is may....
http://www.weather.gov/glossary/index.php?letter=t
Tornado Warning
This is issued when a tornado is indicated by the WSR-88D radar or sighted by spotters; therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. They can be issued without a Tornado Watch being already in effect. They are usually issued for a duration of around 30 minutes.

A Tornado Warning is issued by your local National Weather Service office (NWFO). It will include where the tornado was located and what towns will be in its path. If the tornado will affect the nearshore or coastal waters, it will be issued as the combined product--Tornado Warning and Special Marine Warning. If the thunderstorm which is causing the tornado is also producing torrential rains, this warning may also be combined with a Flash Flood Warning. If there is an ampersand (&) symbol at the bottom of the warning, it indicates that the warning was issued as a result of a severe weather report.

After it has been issued, the affected NWFO will followed it up periodically with Severe Weather Statements. These statements will contain updated information on the tornado and they will also let the public know when warning is no longer in effect.
Tornado Watch
This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area. Their size can vary depending on the weather situation. They are usually issued for a duration of 4 to 8 hours. They normally are issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review tornado safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.

A Tornado Watch is issued by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma. Prior to the issuance of a Tornado Watch, SPC will usually contact the affected local National Weather Forecast Office (NWFO) and they will discuss what their current thinking is on the weather situation. Afterwards, SPC will issue a preliminary Tornado Watch and then the affected NWFO will then adjust the watch (adding or eliminating counties/parishes) and then issue it to the public. After adjusting the watch, the NWFO will let the public know which counties are included by way of a Watch Redefining Statement. During the watch, the NWFO will keep the public informed on what is happening in the watch area and also let the public know when the watch has expired or been cancelled.

10. I believe you're thinking of a "watch."
Watches come before warnings.

13. link to page for today's date
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/080302_rpts.html BUT, don't bookmark this one as it will always go to this date and be a pain months down the line.

I have this one bookmarked as it goes to "yesterday", not a specific date. Then I click on the date right above the map to go forward/back. http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/

5. There was no tornado.
There was some circulation that went over downtown Oklahoma City, but it's moved on now. There is still circulation, but no tornadoes have formed yet.
As long as you're not watching the NBC affiliate here in OKC. They scared the crap out of my mother, the bastards.

12. Are you seeing any flooding downtown, Duckie?
We have had the rain from hell up here by Penn Square, lots of wind, too.

When the weather's bad, I only watch KWTV or KSPI. All the others are crap.

16. springfield here
Still 61... They are saying Storms turning to snow, then the system stalls, and we get 6 inch's of snow. It would be cool to see tornadoes in a snow storm.

17. Exactly what I was saying - now days, in SPITE of what the official NWS criteria are
they call a warning practically every time they see a cloud with some "circulation", or a "hook echo" type crap on the Doppler.
A warning does NOT mean what it used to, in spite of all the stuff people posted above chastising me. The folks on TV like to get everyone all terrified - be it for tiny bits of snow or ice, every single flash of lightning, etc.
