This may be a dupe: But did you see the 60 Minutes medical care piece????
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 09:43 PM by JanMichael
They did a segment on an independent medical provider founded by a guy (Stan Brock) that used to be on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom!

They provide spot medical, vision and dental, services to uninsured and under-insured people all over America and South America.

When I say dental I mean dental WORK like extraction and fillings. When say vision work I mean vision WORK like new glasses on the spot.

It's all done by these guys who deserve our support.

We need Single Payer Healthcare in the US, and ultimately for all human beings, but in the mean time groups like this stick inspired thumbs in those gigantic gaps in our shitty social safety net.

8. Which is even cooler and deserves all of our support.
Those without money should be able to have their pets, who are their family and loved ones, cared for too.

6. Kudos to those spot lighted, but so many more need what they offer
It's so sad that so many in this great country have no medical/dental/optical option today.

10. Millions do and that's why I'm a crazed Leftist.
But in the mean (which is truly "mean" and nasty) time you have to admire these efforts.

14. I admire them.....
those who have volunteered their time are to be commended.

But when you multiply their effort by the 1000's across the US, it's a drop in the bucket as to the health care crisis we are facing today.

17. I agree 100%.
And the only humanistic answer is Single Payer.

19. When the uninsured or 'lesser insured' are given the same.....
opportunity as junior (elected in 2006) members of Congress, then all Americans will have equal rights to health care.

7. Yes. Republicans have broken our government and
put us on the path to third world status.

Just think how much better off we would have been if Gore or Kerry would have taken their rightful places as our Presidential leaders!

16. Yea, I doubt that congress would have turned Democratic.
Both administrations would have been fighting these corporate thugs, yet it would have been harder for the lobbyists to have had their way. Gore and Kerry would have vetoed many of the coercive bills.

13. This sounds to me like one of the CARE medical missions
You know, like the hospital ship that goes to poor African and Asian countries.

Sorry to hear that the citizens of America are in dire need of such services.

Now 60 percent of their work is in this most munificent country ever.

18. Maybe my cold medicine has made me over-emotional, but
I was in tears through the whole segment. Tears of sympathy and anger. I am furious that an organization founded to provide care to people in Third World countries has so many needy patients in the UNITED STATES that they had to turn people away!!! I am sad that those people who desperately needed care were turned away and had to go on suffering with whatever affliction they had. I imagine how they felt when the announcement was made that they missed that chance at help. I wonder how many people in this country have died in the last decade purely for not having medical access.

I am ANGRY about that! That is NOT the "American Way!" We should be better than this! Thank god both of our candidates have pledged to fix this problem. This truly is a crisis. They better damn well work on it FAST too. Just like the war, for every day wasted, more lives are lost. Enough is enough.

21. Yes, I saw it. It made me cry, and I know it's the tip of the iceburg.
My adult sons have been uninsured for about 20 years, never making enough money to afford to buy medical insurance. They have worked their tails off all their lives and don't deserve this, as do millions of people all over this country. When you go from paycheck to paycheck just able to pay for food, shelter and transportation, there is no room for vision, dental, or health insurance. Shame on this country!

I'm sending them a check.

SHIT! I can barely afford to donate to Doctors Without Borders any more, and here's a group practicing third world medicine IN OUR OWN DAMN COUNTRY.

No, it ain't just Bush-- this has been going on for a long time. But when the hell is it going to stop?
