I heard on NPR this morning: Outsourcing has doubled
Outsourcing has doubled since 2004! And now of course the IT industry outsourcing is accelerating, and we're losing financial services jobs, and a lot more "skilled" jobs overseas. The speaker refered to outsourcing as "labor arbitrage" At least the rhetoric is getting more honest.

Oh and get this - of course a lot of companies are now looking to other countries and wages in India get "too high". String these bastards up by the short ones I say. Hang these trustfund to CEO success stories up by the short ones and take our damn country back!!!!!!!

Aside from the obvious 'bullshitosity' of their "we will keep the "good" jobs here", what about all those management jobs that are lost? What about the HR, and the Admins, and the office cleaners, and water cooler delivery drivers, and UPS guys that would pick up packages for those offices, and on and on and on.

This crap has to STOP!

3. And NPR cheerfully reports on gutting of US IT Sector

Ah the Prison-Military-Industrial-Lake-Wobegon-Complex that is NPR. Thanks, Former Voice of America Propagandist-in-Chief, and Bush Appointee to CPB, Ken Tomlinson! Great JOB!

This report was one of those pro-management, Kenneth Tomlinson-influenced excuse for lazy press-release-stenography-reporting that makes me change over to AM Radio.

4. Then why is my fee going up??

Seriously.

It's insanely ludicrous.

I'm a technical writer, which is a specialized skill. It is similar to chess. Technical writing is something that many people attempt, but few do well.

I do it well.

Unfortunately, Technical writing is a job that can be outsourced because, ostensibly, you can write from anywhere.

Now then, I have been laid off twice since 1999. I'm a contractor (itself a form of outsourcing), that's the way the business goes. I understand that.

Here's the crazy part.

I started out making in the mid 30Ks in 1999.

The next job, I got a 10K pay raise.

I'm up for another job now, that if I get it, I will get an approximately 13K pay raise.

FOR THE SAME COMPANY!!

While I definitely love the money and could definitely use it (education, remodeling on my home, retirement, perhaps some travel) , tell me where this makes any kind of business sense for the company?!?!

Don't tell me that companies are interested in lowering labor costs. That's stupid when the truth is, I would have been just as happy working at the same job and getting piddly 2-5% pay raises each year.

Instead, I have to treat my career as if I were some sort of vagabond corporate thespian, grabbing whatever I can whenever I can. And people are paying it. I'm not even unusual in my trade.

And I'm not the only one. Programmers and engineers are being treated to the same career path.

Please tell me how any of this makes sense, because I sure as heck don't know.
