WV County Commissioner stands-up to ES&S Voting Machines, becomes target of smear campaign
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 11:14 AM by IanDB1

Someone issued a paid press release with a misleading headline that made it appear that The FBI MAY investigate Kent Carper. In fact, what they were doing was asking The FBI to investigate him. Which anyone can do to just about anyone, and then pay to distribute a press release about it.

See this thread (which was locked, because it wasn't LBN-worthy):
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3207417&mesg_id=3207417

Also, please note that The Original Poster in the above mentioned thread is also the person who paid to publish the Press Release.

Some disclosure to that effect in the original message would have been nice.

BREAKING - ES&S MELTDOWN CONTINUES: Legal Actions Filed in Indiana and West Virginia

WV County Withholds $1.2 Million Payment to Electronic Voting Machine Company
'They Are Hiding Out,' Says County Commissioner About Previous Company Promises to Service the County

Guest Blogged by John Gideon

The ES&S Meltdown around the country which The BRAD BLOG exclusively covered yesterday, as the Texas Sec. of State's office informed Election Officials to "create emergency paper ballots", now continues to widen to other states around the country.

<snip>

In West Virginia, where the County Commissioners Association announced today they will be filing legal action against ES&S, the Charleston Daily Mail reports that Kanawha County, Commission President Kent Carper has locked up a check made out for $1.2M, which represents payment for the county's ES&S voting machines, in his desk drawer.

Carper and other commissioners are deeply upset at the service from ES&S, or lack thereof...
"(The company) has embarrassed themselves," Carper said. "I got a feeling this will get their attention."

...
County Commissioner Dave Hardy noted with the May 9 primary election less than two weeks away, getting the machines online is critical.

"I can't think of anything more important right now," Hardy said. "The whole credibility of our election process is riding on this."

Last September, company officials promised commissioners the machines would be available and compliant by the Jan. 1, 2006 deadline required by the Help America Vote Act.

"They sat there and told us that they would be very careful with Kanawha County, that they would have a presence here," Carper said. "Now they are hiding out."

It appears that a lot of the money that ES&S is raking in will be paid back out to attorneys who will have to go to court to try to defend the poor work of the company that counts (or is supposed to) more American votes than any other.

1. Thanks for the info.
This goes a long way toward explaining why a brand-new member of DU (joined on March 1) has started ten posts in ten different fora in one day, all besmirching Kent Carper. Methinks I smell a rat!

2. It doesn't mean that it's not true. But at the very least, some disclosure was due.
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 11:35 AM by IanDB1
For example, if one posts a Press Release (especially one accusing someone of a crime) one SHOULD have the decency to disclose that they are the ones who researched, composed, and paid for the press release.

Mr. Jack Swint does appear to have an impressive resume and credentials. I haven't researched whether or not his resume is accurate, but if I were to assume it was, it would lend his allegations some credibility. http://www.jackswint.com/

However, posting one's own press release as a LBN Story without disclosing that it is YOUR OWN press release brings the credibility meter back down to Zero, if not to Negative One.

5. Thank You
The information is all very true. Jack Swints credentials are intack. I made the mistake of not knowing how this posting system works.

Thanks for saying what you did. And yes, we should have more clearified the source of the info. But, as you said, it does not take away from the fact it occured.

Take care

4. I Stand Corrected
Yes Im "brand new member" whose only mistake is that I did not understand how the system here worked. I now know....

But, dont let it take away from the true facts of the post itself. Research and develop what occurred. Its not a smear campaign over election machines????

What we posted are facts that no one could just pull out of there magical hat.

Thanks for letting me know we over did it on the postings.... its a mistake, not a conspiracy.

3. Sorry,,,, But You Dont Smell A Rat
Sorry to disappoint your theory, you dont smell a rat. You smell someone who did not have a clue how this discussion forum works and thought you had to post in various sections.

But, either way, the information is ALL TRUE..... instead of calling me the rat, check out the information and the REAL RAT will emerge as W. KENT CARPER....

And thats the facts & truth....

Thanks for enlightening me though how to enter posts...

6. This board generally frowns on disparaging our fellow Democrats.

I just hope you've got good back-up for your accusations.

If he's a crook, he needs to go Democrat or not.

If he's not, well, then...

8. I remember when this happened
Im also new on the DU, and is one reason I signed up to post my knowledge of what really happened after learning of this original posting by "PWDGroup." I lived in WV when all of this scandal occured in the 1980's. It happened folks!! Mr Carper first denied the allegations in 1993 when they surfaced. In fact, Carper resigned as the chief of police in 1987 after it happened in 1986. He claimed it was for other reasons. Anyone (hopefully the FBI) will finally put this to rest after all of these years.

There are very credible witness accounts, like three DEA agents (one was the resident agent in charge) and depositions were taken in Jacksonville Florida in 1987 and they elude to the WV plot. A link to that case, and the actual drug dealer is below. You just have to log in (passwords provided)type in his name, (Darrell Paige)click on "felony" and it will be the first felony case that comes up.

Unfortunately, it appears to all be true. Democratic politician or not, this guy Carper needs to be held accountable.

I said my peace, thank you.

Ed
