Susan Wedberg thought she had done everything right.
She had nearly $600,000 in a retirement account when multiple sclerosis forced her to retire after 25 years at Community First National Bank in Fargo.
Her nest egg was more than some people save, certainly, and less than others tuck away. But Wedberg, who is in her 50s, believed she had enough for the next phase of her life.
That was in 1999, before Wedberg became quadriplegic because of a medical procedure, before she divorced – and before she began paying for caregivers that her health insurance does not cover.
Wedberg’s retirement funds have dwindled to about $120,000. She figures the remaining money will be gone in about a year.

Money is the bottom line in this country for the Haves. The Have Nots are useful only so long as they have money that can be sucked out of them. If they find they don't, the dumpster is over there.
