New Hope for Women, an agency that provides services for battered women, children and all people affected by domestic violence in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties, would be one organization forced to close in the wake of the state’s plan to cut $1,092,744 for domestic violence victims’ services, said Kathleen Morgan, New Hope’s executive director.
“I have no idea where victims of domestic violence will go,” Morgan said. “Thousands of abused women, men and their children throughout the state will have no place to turn, if New Hope for Women and the other eight domestic violence programs in Maine are forced to close.”
On top of the state’s plan to eliminate funding, four main sources of federal funding are planned either to be completely or drastically cut, Morgan said. In total, the state and federal cuts would represent 60 percent ($536,407) of New Hope’s budget. Fifteen full-time positions and seven part-time educator positions are at stake, Morgan said. If the budget passes, the state cuts are scheduled to go into effect July 1.
