I wasn't too sure what to make of it when I first heard about it. I had heard that Tommy Lee Jones was brilliant and just about every review I had read gave the film high marks.
One of the elements to the film, aside from the great performances, was the film's look. Shot somewhere in the southwest during the winter, trees were bare, the ground had only light dusting of snow, fields and scenery looked dead and lifeless. Some of the scenes shot in offices were done under a harsh light. Not only that, the color of the film seemed faded and lacking vibrancy. Shots taken in sunlight seemed harsh. All together these elements gave the film a very bleak look.
I was quite surprised when I didn't see Tommy Lee Jones or Charlize Theron in line for any Oscars.
Lastly, as some DUers have already stated-THE ENDING WAS BRILLIANT.
