if you checked out the platform of the Republican Party of 1860, you'd find it to be very liberal by today's standards-promoting public education through the establishment of land grand colleges, giving free land to anyone who would stay on it for a given number of years (Homestead Act), and a stand to not allow slavery to spread to the territories.
