Baby Items NOT made in China???
Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 12:26 AM by Milo_Bloom
We have a baby coming in 3 months and we absolutely, positively, do not want any items made in China.

In short, trying to find flipping baby items is eating up more time than it will take to raise the baby.

If others are in a similar position, there might be some information in here for you, but hopefully, maybe, someone will have some information for me as well.

We managed to find a stroller and a car seat at an amazing price

SOME Peg Perego strollers are made in Italy (for example the P3)... You can get "last years model" at about half price here.

http://www.albeebaby.com/pegpeplp320s.html

Car seat here:

http://www.albeebaby.com/pegpe20prvis.html

The Aria (their cheaper model) IS made in China.. so if you don't want China made products, beware of that model.

Britax strollers and car seats are "Made in the USA" from "international parts" (they will not say what countries when asked).

Graco, Evenflo, etc... ALL made in China.

In my searching I have managed to find a lot of helpful links, BUT most of the items are for CHILDREN, not BABIES.

This link has a lot of items BELIEVED not to be from China
http://toys-without-china.com/index.php

But my own research casts doubt on some of these items. For example, I have yet to find a TIny Love product NOT made in China, but they are listed under the not made in china on this link.

There is this link
http://www.nmctoys.com/

Edited to add one more link I just found oompa.com allows you to search by where a toy is made!

But they really don't have things like Baby Mobiles, etc..

There is of course, www.chinafreechristmas.info but they, again, don't really cover baby stuff, only older children.

I am looking for the following items: Mobiles... Nursery Yard... Bouncer/Swing, but so far I am finding just about every single one is made in China... any advice?

Thanks

1. good luck....
but don't forget....nurseries and day cares and preschools and playgrounds and all will never ever be China-safe for sure. Even eating at restaurants using plastic utensils and all and those play areas. You can never ever eliminate the risk. It sure is scary, huh? And, now, there are even problems with the drinking water.....(See breaking news area) And, most of all...watch out for those shots. We have a high-functioning autistic grandson thanks to that.......we are sure the shot did it as the seizures started that evening....

Take each day at a time. And, PRAY!

3. I hear ya...
I know the risk can never be eliminated, but at least if enough people stop playing ball, things WILL change. Already I can hear the frustration in these companies when I call and ask where a product is made. One guy got really snippy with me yelling "That phone you are talking on is made in China" to which I responded, "I am not sucking on it"

I also forgot to mention in the above we are going with the Born Free bottles (Made in Israel and BPA free).

We are also going to be seeing Dr. Jay Gordan as our pediatrician in Santa Monica who follows a more sane vaccination schedule.

The fact that we, as a society, let it get this far continues to baffle me!

7. Excellent.. all have been added to favorites... but...
One thing I have learned... Organic and Made in China are not mutually exclusive.

At whole foods we found several organice baby items, which upon checking the label, were made in China, so i will need to do some digging!

Thank you so much!

FYI: Haba toys are from Germany. ee-Boo games are made in the USA. Melissa & Doug makes theirs in China, but M&D staffers oversee the production onsite and test everything going out and coming in. There's also some cute pull-toys from Israel that are made with natural-base paint.

11. Sit-N-Stroll might be made in USA
I have one and love it. Well, the kid is getting too big for it now, (he's 3 1/2) so I use a regular carseat, but it's the greatest invention for baby travel ever.

The company is based in Hopkins, MN, but I don't recall if the seat itself is make here. I hope so, because it's a damn good product!

12. I'll suggest Findusmade.com
There are thousands of categorized individual sources, 10 online malls, numerous online state directories & several searchable databases for Made in the USA products. That may be why I somehow seem to spend hours there when I visit.

I recall seeing high chairs, cribs & seats in the Baby section so you might find the items you seek. You might also check the online malls & databases on the Made in the USA Sites page.

This site has all sorts of sources nicely pulled together in one place. When I wasn't shopping, just looking, I learned a great deal about present day manufacturing in the US which gave me hope. Americans are simply innovative by nature.

13. Congrats! Our 3rd is due in July
Luckily we know we really don't need all the crap that we bought for our first. So far we have a Britax Boulevard, a mai tai carrier, some blankets, and the crib. We are looking at crib mattresses and trying to find an organic mattress that we don't have to ship.

But we are fortunate. I don't have to work so no need for bottles, pumps, strollers, bouncy seats, etc. We just didn't use them, even though we bought them, with our first two.

It's amazing though how easily first time parents are scared into a bunch of crap. I frequent pregnancy boards and there was a thread "warning" other mothers that if their crib was over 3 years old that for safety reasons they need to buy a new one.

You probably won't need most of the things you listed. I found most of it just took up space, it rarely got used. The only things we used was a baby carrier and a double stroller. Our crib just really sat there, sometimes my kids would sleep in it, but once they hit 6 months, they pretty much just slept with us.

Good luck.

15. Good luck on that
First, congratulations on the new addition to your family. Wonderful news. 4 years ago my husband and I traveled to China to bring our daughter home. We were told by the adoption agency that we needed to bring a present for the orphanage she had been living in, in addition to the $1000 "gift" and the gifts for the orphanage director, his senior staff and some of the officials. The orphanage gift was supposed to be for children but could not be made in China and was supposed to reflect some aspect of the area in the US you were from. We finally found some woven cotton blankets made locally that we bought and gifted to the orphanage. But it was tough. Perhaps you could go to some local crafts fairs. You might be able to find some out of the ordinary, non-mass produced items and support local artisans at the same time.

17. *Remember something* 'Made in the USA' is a bit subjective
Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 08:46 AM by underpants
Mannufacturers pay good money to buy legislators so they will change what consitutes "Made in the USA". I am not sure about toys but I know that even black steel pipe can be make overseas but painted here and that qualifies as "American made". Just saying.

You might also want to check with US textile unions to see WHO they produce for.
