It is the closest thing I've seen to a complete explanation of the surveillance program the Bush Administration has assembled.

Siobhan Gorman of The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that the National Security Agency has assembled what some intelligence officials admit is a driftnet for domestic and foreign communications.

Here's the way the whole thing works, according to Gorman: into the NSA's massive database goes data collected by the Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Treasury. This information includes data about email (recipient and sender address, subject, time sent), internet searches (sites visited and searches conducted), phone calls (incoming and outgoing numbers, length of call, location), financial information (wire transfers, credit-card use, information about bank accounts), and information from the DHS about airline passengers.

Then the NSA's software analyzes this data for indications of terrorist activity. When it hits upon a suspicious pattern, the NSA "feeds its findings into the effort the administration calls the Terrorist Surveillance Program and shares some of that information with other U.S. security agencies.”

It is my firm belief that Chertoff is positioning himself to become The Eternal Washingtonian. of some sort. No evidence, but if I were his lawyer, I'd be asking some serious questions and doing some serious investigation. This is a really bizarre story.

Eliot Spitzer is extremely wealthy, and so the expenditure was not disproportionate to his wealth. It's odd that it would have been viewed as suspect by the IRS. His wife probably spends that kind of money on her clothes, hair, skin, face, etc. frequently. Most of us have no idea how the other half lives. For us spending $4,000 is a huge deal. But that is not a huge amount for very wealthy people.

I should ad that entrapment probably would not constitute a legal defense here, but that depends on the circumstances. After all, Spitzer knew what he was getting into and that it was illegal. Nevertheless, if he was one of very few clients and someone in the organization was a police informant, Spitzer's lawyers may be able to get a lot of sympathy for him and cast still more shadows on the Justice Department. There is this huge question about who the other patrons of this service.

I have suspected that the Bushies are eavesdropping on Democrats and then extorting their support in the Bushies' efforts. I just hope that one of the Democrats gets the courage to stand up to them sooner or later.

How do they link an internet search to an individual. One of my interests is seeing what people are performing searches on, and I've seen all sorts of crazy inquiries into uranium, bomb-making, etc...

or rather, an individual IP address. For a business, this may mean a certain block of IP's, for an individual household it is usually a static IP assigned by the carrier.

Ok, so now we have a IP, assigned to an individual or business. Now we need to pin the person, since every server out there does IP logging we can deduce that they have the IP that is responsible for a series of searches. The IP, as already mentioned is assigned to a household or a business. A few more probes and it is very likely that somewhere along the line, especially if you use Microsoft products, they may even be able to glean an email address and possibly a name. Outlook and Explorer sometimes cache this stuff and make it readily available to friendly perusing. Most spam and spyware software will prevent this, but you can bet that within a given timeframe the NSA gets the info they want. I could go into more detail... One tip: get rid of MS products for perusing the net and you might be a little better off. There are also some pretty good stealth product out there...but then again you might have to google for them...
