So while it's a slip, it's not a complete cast-off.

11. Historically, men knit and wove.
Women prepared the yarns. In colonial America, men knew how to knit and often took along yarn and needles on long trips to make or repair their stockings. Before the industrial revolution and mechanised looms, men were the primary weavers in home (cottage) industry. Not to say that women didn't knit or weave - but men were very much involved.

Good for you!

12. Yes, but men knitted nickers and women knitted nockers,
nickers would eventually go out of style, while nockers only grew in power and dimension, hence men would start going to pubs and get drunk from depression while women cornered the market on knitting.

57. If you look down thread,
you'll see that I do rug hooking. It was originally developed by fishermen off the Eastern coast in the late 1700s, when they were at sea for lengths of time. A piece of canvas used for the foundation, ripped cloth strips of clothing, food bags or sails, and a fishing hook as the tool. The resulting crude rugs were used on the floors and on the beds for warmth. They took them home and eventually the women took it up.

The most beautiful knitting I ever saw was done by a friend's father. He knitted those wonderful Scandanavian type sweaters with the intricate colored patterns around shoulders/back/chest.

My husband did hand-sewn patchwork piecing and quilting for awhile. But if the doorbell rang, he'd quick hide it under the skirt of the sofa.

58. Thanks! I haven't done any in a coupla years,
way too much time on DU!

I had a funny experience once. I used to sell many of the patterns that I designed. Draw them on the backing fabric and sell them on the internet... women used their own wool for the hooked loops. My work was pretty well known amongst hookers and I did well.

One day I saw a finished rug made from one of my patterns on EBay. I thought it was peculiar, as while I'd had the photo of my own finished rug online for maybe six weeks, I had not offered the rather complicated design pattern for sale until just a couple of weeks before, and I knew who all my customers were for the pattern.

I emailed the seller and asked where she got the pattern. She said, "Oh, I bought it at a garage sale a year or so ago." She had traced/copied my pattern from the internet! I told her that was interesting, because I had not designed the pattern until 2 months before and that I knew all my customers for the pattern, and that she had violated Copyright law and legally I could demand possession or detruction of it.... but I only told her she must remove it from EBay. The rug was down in literally minutes.

I knew how much work she'd put into it, and she'd done a good job (copied my color scheme, too!). And anyway, I was flattered she liked the pattern enough to steal it!

Here are some pictures: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=390&topic_id=362&mesg_id=380

I even belong to a hooker's group on Yahoo:

This is a place for old and new rug hooking artists and people who love hooked rugs and especially for those who love to design, dye wool and make hooked rugs.

Independent Hookers is for rug hookers of any age, gender, or orientation who don't like rules, are sick of either being prim and proper or dealing with those who are; need a place where cursing is freely allowed; where art rugs, wacky rugs, and ALL types of rugs are celebrated (including traditional, if that's what YOU like); where it's okay to be bawdy, to rant and receive support, and where you can be authentically YOU. We disagree often and remain close friends; we protect each other fiercely.

You'll be happiest here if you are a member of either a liberal political party or religion or none at all; if you're way too silly for your age; if you wear your heart on your sleeve; if you don't care about staying on topic; and if committee meetings make you want to jump up and scream.

Our group is not for everyone. We really do curse, we're a tight community, and traffic can be high. We often don't mention rug hooking, dyeing or designing for days at a time. But here among us you may find your hooking friends at last - intelligent, creative, joyful rug hooking artists and enthusiasts who wouldn't make very good Church Ladies but who are nonetheless fine women and men of great character.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Independent_Hookers
