Officials: 5 U.S. troops killed in suicide blast

At least five U.S. soldiers on foot patrol were killed and three others wounded in a suicide bombing Monday in Baghdad, U.S. military officials in Iraq said.

Four soldiers were killed in Monday's blast and one more died later of wounds, the military said. They were with Multi-National Division-Baghdad. An Iraqi interpreter also was wounded in the explosion, the officials said.

Initial reports indicate the bomber was wearing an explosive vest.


As I noted a month or so ago, things are coming unraveled again. All the surge accomplished was to cause the 'enemy' to withdraw from the field, rearm, regroup, and develop a new strategy. The current surge deployment has the troops dispersed on patrol, particularly vulnerable to this type of attack (unless they adopt the approach of lighting up any Iraqi who gets within 50 yards).

Time is coming when the administration will have to up the ante with more troops if the surge 'success' is to continue.

A Red Cross official says up to 30,000 people have fled their homes because of an army operation in western Kenya.

The official says the army on Sunday began pursuing members of a group linked to bloody clashes over land.

Ochiemo Cheptai of the Kenya Red Cross says the army bombed several villages in the Mount Elgon area where group members are believed to be hiding.

Local lawmaker Fred Kapondi says the army is targeting civilians in villages instead of pursuing the militiamen in their forest hideouts. But Mohamud Birik, the local district commissioner, denies that claim.

I must be a real dunce, because when I saw tee vee hyperventilating over Spitzer being "linked to a prostitution ring," I thought they meant he was involved in running a prostitution ring. That would have matched the intensity of the coverage.
