White House denies Bush stifling dissent on Iran

White House denies Bush stifling dissent on Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House denied on Wednesday that President George W. Bush was stifling dissenting views in the military after the resignation of a top commander reported to have been at odds with his hard-line policy on Iran.

"That is absolutely nonsense because President Bush has always fostered an environment of robust and healthy debate," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters when asked whether Bush was trying to quash differing viewpoints.

She also dismissed the notion that the United States was any closer to military action against Iran, which is embroiled in bitter disputes with Washington over the Iraq war and Tehran's nuclear program.

"There's no one in the administration that is suggesting other than a diplomatic approach to Iran," Perino said.

But she also reiterated a long-standing refusal by Bush, who last year warned that a nuclear-armed Iran could mean "World War Three," to rule out military action as a last resort.

Every day that the smirking Thief-in-Chief resides in the White House is another day the poor Iranians have to put up with their own obnoxious hard-liners.
