29. "...to engage U.S. teens with an episode in world history
that is in danger of being forgotten."

From the press release at:
http://www.mtv.com/thinkmtv/about/press_releases.jhtml

Director/photographer Michael Franzini worked with the group at Arnold for six months to craft the most compelling message to engage U.S. teens with an episode in world history that is in danger of being forgotten.

“My generation, Gen X, barely knew what the word Holocaust meant,” said Franzini, referring to a 1993 study by the Roper Organization which found that 53% of U.S. high school students could not say what the Holocaust was. “We were horrified to find that teenagers today know even less.”

Franzini sent out video crews in four cities last year, approaching teenagers on city streets, asking them what the Holocaust was. Responses included speculation that the Holocaust took place in Iraq and that Hitler was a Jew fighting against the Nazis. Almost 2/3 of those questioned had little or no idea what the Holocaust was. <...>

“We all recall black and white images of the holocaust in our minds. But the Holocaust happened to real people, in full color,” said Roger Baldacci, EVP, Creative Director of Arnold Worldwide. “We hope to make these ads relatable to young people by illustrating what some of the events of the Holocaust would look like in the context of today’s world.”

“To prevent the humanitarian crises of tomorrow, we must never forget the tragedies of the past,” said Ian Rowe, VP of Strategic Partnerships and Public Affairs, MTV. “These striking PSAs from Michael Franzini and Arnold Worldwide serve to reawaken our audience to this dark chapter of human history – and inspire them to help fight against the atrocities being committed in the world today.”

89. Not just teens
People who watch MTV "quite regularly" (instead of other "educational TV") tend to gravitate to myspace. I still have a resentment and refuse to watch American Idol because4 more Americans watch and vote there than vote in elections. And these are not all teens. Actually I read somewhere recently that young adults (late teens and early 20s) are more involved in politics.

5. I find it just a little ironic that MTV, one of the main Dumbing down institutions
in this culture, should try to send a message to think...

Yea, I guess that will make them think about it for a minute...

Until the next edition of Real Life or what ever it is they call that inane show is aired...

And, MTV has always had some political messages, from Rock the Vote to the documentary they made on Soulforce.

17. MTV gets a bad rap
They got hoi polloi much more involved with the music industry's A&R than had ever happened before. Now, obviously popular music is not in my top 10 list of important issues in this country, but then again they are Music TeleVision so I don't expect too much else.

As an Xer, I definitely see MTV as one of the dividing lines between me and people older than me, and I think it reflects how we do politics.

I believe they jumped the shark when they were sold to CBS and started in with the reality shows...

I remember waiting for Sunday nights to watch 120 min...

My point is, if you just flash those messages within the pimple cream and fashion commercials, how will that make an impact...

To me, there doesn't seem to be any there there...

In fact, there ain't too much there there anywhere on the cable anymore...

Especially when you consider that the National Geographic Channel is owned by Fox...

10. makes me wonder, what MTV-experience inspired these...
i bet that this media giant has had at least one "run-in" with Homeland Security, either thru events programming or broadcast censorship/manipulation.

these videos have an exact message -- to wake up to the real-ness of a fascist US. to let go of the illusion that fascism is something that happens elsewhere, at a different time.

to me, this indicates that "the producer" (either MTV or the org that sponsored the production/distribution) is reacting to something specific, personal and "real." this doesn't seem to be a Public Service Announcement created in a vacuum.

22. I think it largely depends
on who wins the next election. I don't mean between Clinton and Obama - I mean between our nominee (whenever we have one) and McCain. This so called war on terror has inspired wonderful things, hasn't it? Like the Patriot Act, the National ID Act, (which I'm proud to say, Maine shot down) telecom companies spying on citizens without needing well... ANY reason. The torture of innocent prisoners and prisoners of war, (with perhaps a sprinkling of actual criminals thrown in) and much, much more.

Then again, considering how well our "victory" in 2006 has served us... perhaps the next President won't make much of a difference at all. It's disturbing to me that both our candidates voted in favor of the Patriot Act, and the funding for the war in Iraq.

30. I don't know if that's a warning.
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 06:46 PM by UncleSepp
I read it as rehumanizing the victims of the Holocaust, as people like us (as it says) and not as some kind of other species of person. In a time of othering, bigotry, division, not to mention increasing Holocaust denial and anti-Jewish sentiment across the political spectrum, it's an important lesson to remember on its own. Of course, that by its nature carries a message of warning, but I don't read warning as its primary purpose.

On edit: After reading the producer's notes, I'm sure it's not a warning. I think people are reading into it what they would like to see - but that's a good thing, that's what good art is for.

66. Doesn't logically follow?
Normal, average, daily round of life scenarios that are suddently violated with sadist goons herding people with guns. That's how the Holocaust happened.

Why would anyone carefully construct such suggestive images during a time when our gov't has implemented numerous police state tactics
To put ordinary modern people into the shoes of the people who experienced the Holocaust.

Does it logically follow that this wouldn't be a heads-up warning? No, not if you start from the wrong place! I don't want to be rude, but I can't imagine a nice way of saying that you've got the cart before the horse here. The director, Franzini, didn't start from current police state tactics and adopt imagery of the Holocaust along the way. He started with a study showing increasing ignorance among American teenagers about the Holocaust and worked into modern imagery as a teaching tool. If you don't believe me, believe the press release:

The interviews can be viewed at http://michaelfranzini.com/holocaust/interviews.mov

That the spots are airing on MTV further supports the director's explanation of his motivations for his own work. Positioning the spots on MTV better targets the GenXers and younger people identified in the Roper study and in Franzini's interview as having a lack of knowledge about the Holocaust.

Is there a warning? Of course - in the sense that those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. From the press release again:

“To prevent the humanitarian crises of tomorrow, we must never forget the tragedies of the past,” said Ian Rowe, VP of Strategic Partnerships and Public Affairs, MTV. “These striking PSAs from Michael Franzini and Arnold Worldwide serve to reawaken our audience to this dark chapter of human history – and inspire them to help fight against the atrocities being committed in the world today.”

The warning could as easily be about Darfur or any number of other places as about the United States. Any study of the past carries with it warnings about the present - that's why we study history. Yes, the spots carry a warning, but that wasn't why the spots were made.

We are becoming a surveillance society and people are being harassed all the time by out of control cops. There are those FEMA detention camps just waiting. People don't realize that Ollie North worked for FEMA, which was created as a two-sided coin. One part for black ops and the other side to appear to be of assistance. The latter is the cover.

BTW.. I think you might enjoy this. Do you remember when Adm. John Poindexter was hired by Shrub to head up DARPA? There was a daily press briefing from Ari Fleisher and the most wonderful/awesome Helen Thomas had the following exchange with him.

http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=61634

That's a summary of the President's day. Helen.

Q: Ari, why would this administration choose a man for couterterrorism who is so associated with the dark side of the Iran Contra scandal, Admiral Poindexter?

MR. FLEISCHER: When you say, choose him for counterterrorism, can you be more specific?

Q: He's in the Pentagon, he's been appointed head of DARPA, which is a counterterrorist office, developing plans, demonstrations with information.

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm not aware of any appointment.

Q: Yet.

MR. FLEISCHER: Let me just say about Admiral Poindexter, Admiral Poindexter is somebody who this administration thinks is an outstanding American and an outstanding citizen who has done a very good job in what he has done for our country, serving in the military.

Q: How can you say that, when he told Colonel North to lie?

MR. FLEISCHER: Helen, I think your views on Iran Contra are well-known, but the President does believe that Admiral Poindexter served --

Q: It isn't my view, this is the prosecutor for the United States.

MR. FLEISCHER: I understand. The President thinks that Admiral Poindexter has served our nation very well.

Q: Really?

MR. FLEISCHER: That's the President's thoughts.

Q: Do you know his record?

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm sure you will inform me.

Q: I don't have to, all you have to do is look it up.

You may want to watch them quickly.

P.S. Where are all the Conspiracy-Hater, Coincidence-Theorists who used to tell us this type of opinion is "overblown" or "fearmongering"? Stupid assclowns like them are the direct reason we're in this mess.

85. Yrs back it was easier for the conspiracy hater crowd to shout down the warnings
Things began to shift though, with more voicing legitimate concern, resulting in greater silence from those who don't want to come down off the fence, and fewer, yet more aggressive, crusading conspiracy haters.

93. He doesn't have to leave. He just passes the torch to the next.
Doesn't matter which party. Why do you think we only have a two party system? Take gun control. Why has that been a big issue since the 70's? Its not just "gun crime" fueling it.

Its not the Military we should worry about either. Its the DEA,ATF,FBI,your local S.W.A.T teams and our Judicial system. We were called idiots, militia nuts, and worse during the 80's and 90's for saying that the Government was out to gain total control. What do you think now?
For those who think the 2nd amendment is arcane and useless in the 21st century, they should pay more attention to history and to present day events.

MTV putting out this message, for what ever reason, boggles my mind.

67. Well I'll be damned! The real sheep look up!
But hey, its best not to resist. Just go along and you wont get hurt. Also just turn your weapons in at the gate, it will be easier that way. Only, if your a sheep it will.

I'll truly admit that I am shocked that this comes from MTV. Someone must have slipped it by the censors some how. MTV, proving why the Founding Fathers added the Second Amendment, why you should never let the Government 'protect' you. My head spins.
MTV, doing something useful! Or, better yet, warning the common citizen of events that may/could happen. And don't fool yourselves, any of the Elite party members, if there is a difference, are capable of this. We The People. That! Is what they fear the most. Interesting times we live in, interesting times indeed.

Remember this, young ones, never, ever let the Government decide what's 'right' for you. Make them fear you, not the other way around

Those who want defend this, and say it could/will never happen. Step up.

81. Every so often we post the what you can do, or at least some of us
do

1.- Start talking to your neighbors. Believe you me, the isolation created by the state by design or accident ain't helping

2.- Talk to your kids, teach them history

3.- Become politically active, if you speak now, you may avoid the worst of this.

4.- If it gets really bad, and it may come to that... shut up and bear witness... somebody will have to keep a record of what happened.

82. More of what we can do....
5. Fire off e-mails with links to everyone you know. Sign online petitions, pester Congress critters by fax, phone and snail mail -- in massive onslaughts by the millions.

6. Boycott corporate news and let them know why they're losing customers en masse to the blogosphere.

7. Go on Youtube and social networking sites; comment, write up a storm.

8. Boycott the big corps. Refuse to buy their products and tell them why every so often.

9. Support each other by showing respect and compassion.
