France says "Va te faire foutre" to Nicolas Sarkozy
See what happens to Bush wannabes, Sarko? :nopity:

from the UK Independent:

Poll defeat launches Sarko II
By John Lichfield in Paris
Sunday, 16 March 2008

France’s Socialist opposition scored a string of victories in local elections tonight, forcing President Nicolas Sarkozy to take radical action to rebuild the style of his presidency.

After the second round of municipal elections, the Left appeared on course to capture over 20 large towns from the centre-right, including Strasbourg, Reims, Amiens and Caen.

The Socialists scored a landslide victory in the greatest municipal prize of all, Paris. Early estimates also suggested that the centre-right mayors of Marseilles and Toulouse were fighting for their electoral lives. Overall, the centre-right was expected to lose at least 20 large and middle-sized town halls – shifting the country’s majority of municipal control to the Left.

Even before yesterday’s voting, President Sarkozy had set in motion plans to adopt a quieter and more traditional presidential style, abandoning some of the familiarity, freneticism and conspicuous consumption which has alienated many voters. In theory, at least, M. Sarkozy will return to the more aloof and semi-detached approach of his predecessors,

Out will go the Rolex watches, dark glasses, jogging shorts and instant-reaction politics of the last ten months. Instead, President Sarkozy has been advised to cultivate a more sobre, restrained and statesmanlike image – starting with his state visit to Britain next week.

In an unchraracteristic act of mea culpa, the President will, in effect, accept most of the blame for last night’s results and the rapid plunge in his popularity since the New Year. There will be no large-scale government reshuffle. The prime minister, François Fillon, will keep his job. ............(more)

2. Sarkozy is clueless
He's the laughing stock of France. We saw this coming last week but it's even better than the French left predicted.

5. There's an electoral model I could get into.....
Since I believe population centers tend democratic/left....picture in this country if large cities had an input to the national debate.I don't like large cities and wouldn't want to live in one. But most people would have to admit that they are where the commerce and art and educational institutes of the country are.And while believing their input is of more import to the country as a whole, I would rest confidant that they would never use that influence to the detriment of rural people since that is where their food comes from-you don't burn down your own kitchen. San Francisco values-bring'em on...while you might not be allowed to bash gays we might be able to truly be our brother's keeper.....and food and shelter and healthcare are good things...
