I'll be at a vigil at my alma mater, Eastern Michigan University.

If you need to find a nearby event, visit: http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/index.html?action_id=112

8. Nowhere special but THANK YOU for not calling it a "war"
Illegal invasion of a sovereign country and illegal occupation is how I characterize it.

9. Yup. I've been trying to work "Iraq War" out of my vocabulary.....
Call it like it is. An illegal, unprovoked invasion based on a mountain of lies.

16. The really awful aspect of it is that EVEN IF the rationale hadn't been lies
it STILL wouldn't be defensible! How many nations have WMDs that are publicly acknowledged? We don't invade THEM. Some of those countries just -might- go jingo and attack somebody, sometime. I mean, shit, it's not as if any nation has actually used weapons of mass destruction on another country, right? Oh, wait...

I'll either be in Boston (I hope) or at an event closer to home. Only problem
for me is that it's at rush hour at one location and that's a very busy area.
But so is the one in Boston. - Boston Common from 4:30 - 6:30 PM. My biggest
problem getting there is $$. I could just hold one near my house too!
I have before and I still have all the signs. ;)

15. LOL
I am on the MoveOn e-mail list but I changed e-mail/ISP accounts recently and I haven't
notified anybody yet. I am still test driving the new ISP (it's free for 30 days) so I
didn't want to change everything over until I decide to keep it. Thanks! :P

14. That's a cool classic-looking train station.....
As opposed to the one in Detroit that looks like an H&R Block office.

17. It's not a train station anymore, though. It's an annex to the Pierce County courthouse.
The foyer leading to what was once the main concourse is now rented out for office parties and things like that. The company I work for had their Christmas party there last December. The place is hung floor-to-ceiling with original Dale Chihuly sculptures:

20. At a vigil this evening
which I was happy to see was publicized in this morning's newspaper. I hope to see a good turnout.

ALASKA TROOPS IN IRAQ

109 fatalities all troops killed in Iraq*

23 fatalities 172nd Stryker Brigade (Fort Wainwright)

53 fatalities; 4th Airborne Brigade (Fort Richardson)

* Includes Alaskans based elsewhere and troops based in Alaska

In the past five years, thousands of troops from Army, Air Force and National Guard units based in Alaska have been deployed to Iraq as well as other hot spots in the war on terror.

3,800 members of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team from Fort Wainwright shipped to Iraq in August 2005 and returned home in December 2006.

3,500 members of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) from Fort Richardson, deployed to Iraq in September 2006 and returned home in November 2007.

During the first two years of the war, there were three Iraq deaths involving Alaskans or troops based here. In 2005 there were nine deaths. In 2006 there were 43. In 2007 there were 54.

Candlelight vigil set

Local residents and members of MoveOn.org mark the fifth anniversary of the start of war in Iraq by gathering for a candlelight vigil from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the corner of Benson Boulevard and the Seward Highway.

According to Harry Brod, a political action member with MoveOn.org, the vigil is a way to honor sacrifices made by American military personnel and urge Alaska's congressional delegation to begin bringing troops in Iraq home this year.

Those who wish to participate should meet at Cafe Felix, 530 E. Benson Blvd., before 5 p.m.
