7. Son Jose Mercury first published Webb - men working for the CIA-run army sold
the crack cocaine - not CIA directly - but CIA planes/people helped at every step as Reagan funded the Contras.

24. A crucial component to the U.S.' phony "wars" is creating an enemy
Running a phony "war" on drugs? Strategically create more people to incarcerate.

Running a phony "war" on "terror?" Strategically create situations whereby you can label people's actions as terrorism.

5. google CIA cocaine iran contra
for sh*tloads of info. I'm not certain re- crack vs. other drugs, didn't really focus on that aspect; but I don't think anyone who's seriously looked into it seriously doubts CIA involvement -- with Bush Sr.'s knowledge.

8. Anybody seen the documentary "American Drug War"?
It's playing on Showtime this month. Fascinating, in depth documentary on the problems with the "drug war", CIA involvement in bringing in cocaine and distributing it, Gary Webb, Mike Ruppert, medical marijuana, loads of stuff. Catch it if you can.

There was a spot in it about the CIA importing cocaine and distributing it in places, but I don't recall anything linking them to crack specifically.

15. That's an idea that is itself based in racism.
As though people living in the ghetto can't figure out how to turn cocaine into crack.

21. It also presumes
those in the ghettos are not smart enough to stay away from it in the first place. The first place I heard of crack cocaine was from my very white, very gay hairdresser. Warned me not to even try it as it made people violent and was highly addictive.

20. I remember that before the raygun crew came into the whitehouse
during the winter months it would be almost impossible to find any weed around these parts but soon after the swearing in you could get pot on any street corner and then all of a sudden people I knew who, prior to this, we would sit around and only talk about cocaine cause there wes none to be found, all of a sudden were starting to have problems with it because it too became a street corner drug. Crack didn't make it here to our little corner of the world though and I guess it still hasn't as I still haven't seen any. I thank my lucky stars each and every day that I never liked the paranoia that coke caused me, crank too.

28. Garry Webb did uncover the CIA "frogmen"
bringing cocaine into the U.S. in CA. His take was that the ghettos were not targeted, as in "create crack with this," but that crack is a cheaper form of cocaine and so more of it was in the ghetto.

however, yes, Webb also uncovered a CIA drug biz to finance ILLEGAL extra-constitutional covert ops that had specifically been denied by Congress. Because, for some reason, Congress didn't think it was our place to murder priests like Romero, or rape and murder nuns...some of whom also happened to be Americans.

Robert Parry, who was also a Pulitzer prize nominated reporter for Newsweek before he was on the "bad" list for reporting about Iran-Contra, received the same sort of journalistic attack from big media like Time and Newsweek and the LA Times and others. These same rags have never apologized for reaming Webb and claiming he was lying when in fact, after the fact, it appears he was telling the truth. Webb lost his job at the SJMNews because he was crazy enough to think the powerful will be held accountable for their actions.
