I understand that many academic scientists are moving toward open access publishing to get their results out sooner and in a free forum for other academics. It becomes peer-reviewed through online deliberation, which is really an amazing change from the old "blind" peer review process, which has a lot of flaws. Once universities begin to give tenure credit for such publications, these bigger publishing outfits are screwed, though I bet they'll be donating bricks and mortar funds for Elsevier Halls to stop the trend. The library professionals I know can't stand what they're doing to the industry.
