BIDEN Issues Statement on Five-Year Anniversary of Iraq War

BIDEN: “Treading Water in Iraq Does Not Equal Progress”

Washington, DC – Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) issued the following statement on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War:

“As we mark the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War tomorrow, we should ask two questions: Are we any closer than we were a year ago – when the surge began – to ending the war? And what is the Administration’s plan to do so? Those are the questions most Americans want answered, but this Administration cannot or will not answer. The surge has helped bring violence down, but when it ends, we will be right back where we started: with 130,000 troops in Iraq, with the country no nearer to self-sustaining stability and with no end in sight for America.

“Treading water in Iraq does not equal progress and we can’t keep doing it without exhausting ourselves. When Congress returns, the Foreign Relations Committee will hold two weeks of hearings to look at where we go next and how we can start to leave Iraq without leaving chaos behind.”

3. He would have been one hell of a president.
Biden sure knows his foreign policy stuff.

And he would have kicked McCain's ass up one block and down the other.

4. I SO agree -- Biden in a debate with the Rep nom - I'd pay to see that.
I'm encouraged that he's at least back in Washington keepin' on keepin' on and fighting the good fight for us all.

11. Near the end of the recent SFRC hearings on NATO expansion
The panelists (academics/think tank/other folks, not Bush admin) were talking about how various aspects of the future of NATO depend on whether current U.S. president gets his act in gear (guess = no), or what happens with the next president, who will have to either roll over to Russia on some issues, or be willing to get into a squabble with them. Anyway... At one comment something like "needing a president who will engage with Europe on this..." Biden said, "well, I tried". It was both funny and sad.

He seems to be having a bit of fun with the Sec. of State speculation. Promoting Richard Holbrooke at his CFR talk when Holbrooke was there. Promoting Lugar at this hearing. Interesting.

6. Bless that Man
Biden is fearless. He has the guts of Kucinich and the eloquence of Obama, yet he just can't seem to win the trust and affection of the masses.

He just is an amazing human being, IMO. Hope he sticks in there, no matter what, just speaking his mind, writing books, and telling the truth.

Go Joe!

10. Keep it up.
I hope Joe keeps the pressure on.
While so many others are concentrating their interests on the election.....he just keeps reminding us why he is so important to this country.

I would hope a wise candidate would utilize Senator Biden to the maximum of his abilities. The country needs Joe......
