Screw gold, after what I've read on DU for the last few months I've invested in
milk.

I don't drink milk, but everyone has been talking about the increase in milk prices. Today Kroger had milk for $6 for two gallons. I bought 500 gallons, I'm hoping the price will continue to rise and in 5 or 6 months turn a nice profit.

2. I'm with you. I've also heard rumors that...
...fresh food prices will skyrocket in the next couple of years, so I've filled my garage with tons of fresh vegetables. Let's see who's laughing when I'm a veggie millionaire.

9. But, you see, I have a garage, but I don't have a garden.
So nice, fresh, ripe vegetables (and fruit, too, I'm not stupid) are a much better investment. In two or three years, my lovely, succulent tomatoes and delicious squash will be worth a king's ransom. A king's ransom, I tell you!

Fie on your seeds!

15. I'm with you on the water!
I've already got the bathtub full and have started storing gallon jugs of the stuff at the office. My wife's a bit miffed at not being able to bathe or shower any more, but I tell her it's for the greater good.

Haven't got a sunny window, unfortunately. A big tree shades that side of the apartment all day. But wait a minute, if I chop it down, I'll have firewood! Excellent! I'm halfway to self-sufficiency already.

20. LOL Self suffecient for TODAY! Yes you are.
Seems to be the general thinking by consumers/citizens. They are gonna howl soon, so ya might wanna save any cotton balls you find in your vitamin and OTC pain relievers. Conservation, one step at a time. ;)

7. personally, I'm really sorry that French co. that sold preserved milk
i forget the exact term, it was wet not powdered, but it basically came in a box and could sit on a shelf for years --

I'm sorry they went out of biz. I could totally use that stuff.

22. I bought a gallon yesterday for $3.00 myself - dirt cheap if you ask me
I'll tell you why I say that. I recall what milk cost in 1976. It may suprise you to hear that back then it sold for $2.00 a gallon (when gasoline still sold for less than $0.50 a gallon) compared to $3.00 yesterday. So that's a 50% increase in 32 years, or an average increase of about 1.5% per year. Dirt cheap if you ask me.

24. I tried that. The long term returns were lackluster.
I think that the family was slowly stealing our nest egg from the fridge. When I confronted them about it, they justified their behavior by rationalizations. Rationalizations like "it'll spoil!" and "are you an idiot?".

I don't think they were entirely down with the concept of "investing".

26. Seriously, buy timber property when lumber hits a new low, for long-term investing.
Trees do not care about the economy, the grow according to the rains instead.

And, you can harvest on years when the price is right, or sell when timber goes up.
Get just enough pasture too, or a rental house, something to keep the taxes paid.
