Pope blows off Condi
Rome (BBC) -- Pope Benedict XVI refused a recent request by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss the Middle East and Iraq, Vatican sources say. The Pope refused a request for an audience during the August holidays.

Senior Vatican sources told the BBC the Pope does not normally receive politicians on his annual holiday at the Castelgandolfo residence near Rome. But one leading Italian newspaper said it was an evident snub by the Vatican towards the Bush administration.

There are at least two reasons why Pope Benedict may have decided peremptorily against a private meeting with Ms Rice.

First, it was Ms Rice who just before the outbreak of the Iraq war in March 2003 made it clear to a special papal envoy sent from Rome, Cardinal Pio Laghi, that the Bush administration was not interested in the views of the late Pope on the immorality of launching its planned military offensive.

Secondly, the US has responded in a manner considered unacceptable at the Vatican to the protection of the rights of Iraqi Christians under the new Iraqi constitution.

7. It IS an unfortunate choice of words.
But I certainly wouldn't want to wish for anyone to be blown off by Condi.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 08:47 PM by frogcycle
my witty retort had already been posted by the time I finished typing

so I edited it out, because usually at least seventeen people jump all over me and say "someone already said that"

so now those seventeen people can bitch because this response has nothing whatever to do with anything and they wasted precious seconds reading it when they could have been typing something nasty to somebody else

I bet she was really miffed, missing out on all that great shoe-shopping in Italy. Hey, Condi, they have some wonderful shoestores in Hell. If there's any justice, you'll be running one of them someday, selling shoes to all those dead Iraqis you helped kill for all eternity.

31. Why would Condi need to talk to the Pope?
Does this mean that God and Bush have had a falling out and aren't talking anymore? Of course as far Bush would be concerned. God will eventually see the err of His ways and finally realize the true greatness of George Bush. History will be his only Judge. If you listen closely on a quite night. You can actually hear God screaming, LIKE HELL IT WILL!

Pope to Visit Ground Zero and Celebrate Mass at Yankee Stadium

By Sewell Chan
Pope Benedict XVIBenedict XVI?s visit to the United States in April will be his first as pope.

Updated, 2:12 p.m. | Pope Benedict XVI will make his first visit to the United States as pontiff over six days in April, and he plans to visit ground zero, address the United Nations and celebrate Masses at National Stadium in Washington and St. Patrick?s Cathedral and Yankee Stadium in New York, officials at the Vatican and the Archdiocese of New York announced today.

The papal visit will be only the fourth in New York City?s history. Pope Paul VI visited in October 1965, during the first-ever papal visit to the United States. Pope John Paul II visited New York in October 1979 and October 1995.

Citing remarks by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Associated Press reported that Pope Benedict will travel to Washington and New York. A statement from the New York archdiocese offered details of the pope?s planned itinerary.

The pope will be in Washington from April 15 to 17 and in New York from April 18 to 20. He is to attend a reception at the White House on April 16 and celebrate Mass at the new National Stadium in Washington on April 17. On April 18, he is to address the United Nations and participate in an Ecumenical Service at a New York parish. On April 19, he will celebrate a morning Mass with priests, deacons and members of religious orders at Saint Patrick?s Cathedral, followed by a visit to Saint Joseph?s Seminary in Yonkers, where the pope will participate in an event with youth and young people.
