About my right-wing bush supporting fundie mother...
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 12:20 AM by cynatnite
Yeah, she's all those things. Sometimes it drives me batshit crazy and sometimes it just makes me laugh. Sometimes it leaves me scratching my head when I think about the life she's lead.

She was one of the few women working in a male dominated company. Even though she supervised many of the men, most made more money than her. The sexism and pay inequalities had gotten so out of hand that she joined with other women to sue them. They won a large settlement. The company was Safeway. She believes completely in women's rights and supported the ERA.

My mother knew a girl who died from a backroom abortion when it was still illegal. While she is personally against abortion for religious reasons, she does not support the government making that decision for women.

She was totally pissed over the whole Schiavo fiasco. Everytime the news showed protesters making concentration camp comparisons to a hospice it set her off. When someone would rake Michael Schiavo over the coals and accuse him of attempting to murder his wife she would call me almost crying over it. I think that's because her and I watched my Dad die of cancer. My Dad's family never gave my mom a moment of peace for a long time after that because of decisions she made in regards to him. It still hurts her to this day.

At the same time, the antiquated beliefs come in and she doesn't think women should preach in church. She believes homosexuality is a sin. She takes the bible literally which just leaves me speechless sometimes. She doesn't know I'm an atheist. She never supported the war, but she thinks gawd put bush in office.

She also does what she can for those who can't do for themselves and she believes there is good in everyone.

My mother is also devoted to family in spite of my librul ways. We joke about it a lot. I tell her she's really a Dem on the inside. That makes her laugh.

I love my mom very much. She's a little screwed in the head sometimes and more often than not, I just leave well enough alone when it comes to her beliefs. It saves both of us a lot of grief. We've had some harsh arguments at times over religion and politics. It's just not worth it when it comes to my relationship with my Mom.

5. She'll vote for Hillary before McCain, but she'll vote for McCain before Obama...
I'm glad about Hillary, but I can't convince her to take Obama over McCain at all. She doesn't trust Obama.

4. Debating politics in the family is tricky
My parents and my older brother are diehard republicans. My younger brother and I are strong democrats/greens.

The problem is that my parents are so dogmatic that I just gave up on having discussions with them. I would offer long policy proposals backed up with facts and they would spout cliches then say I was a democrat because I was young. I remember debating global warming with my dad and I disproved one point he made at least 3 times in 10 minutes (he kept saying volcanos produce more CO2 than man, then I would keep pointing out how the USGS showed they only produce 3% as much), after that I gave up since it wasn't a discussion as there was no give and take.

My older brother is alot more open minded and I like discussing politics with him. I don't agree with him on alot of issues, but he is a reasonable person who I can have a give and take with.

9. It sure is...
My grandpa is a Fox watching, O'Reilly loving, bush supporting Repub. Even my mother is just astonished at how he gets about politics.

There are times when it's best just to leave it alone. LOL

11. You are so right
My older brother is a Republican Right Wing asshole. It is kind of ironic, considering how we grew up. He has real liberal, progressive ideas in high school, but as he got older and married (to a shrill, harpy Baptist woman - we grew up Roman Catholic), he slowly changed. Ironic also, since my Mom and Dad always have been registered Democrats. I don't even talk to my brother any more and try to avoid him at family gatherings.

7. here, this should make your feel better.....
I just posted this a little earlier in GD-P but when I came over here and read your post, it reminded me of my son-in-law and today.....

Anyway, stay strong and just remember, your Mom is only one person and it gets pretty cold when you are on the outside. She'll come over...just keep throwing her bones....

Anyway, happy reading and I hope you smile.....

8. I enjoyed that description. Sounds like a parent. I know my father
practiced his religion only for our benefit (he was secular when he married my mother) but kept it up until the day he died. My mother didn't believe a word of mumbo jumbo but kept a kosher home as long as he was alive.

Go figure.
