Did anyone else watch Diane Sawyers 2hr special on prostitution? |
|
Obviously this must have been put together well before the Eliot Spitzer arrest.
The show focused on how miserable prostitutes are, how they are arrested but the "johns" never are, the low pay, abuse and drug use, the lure of big money vs. the reality and the general degradation. I guess it was a good slug of reality after hearing the huge amount of money some people probably think these girls make if they get to "do" the Governor.

2. I didn't see it but I'm totally sympathetic to women |
|
who have been forced into prostitution and deeply saddened about the trafficking of human beings for this (or any other purpose).
On the other hand, I think the time has come to separate these victims from HOs, greedy young women (including college students) who will sell their bodies for bling. I have no sympathy for the latter group.

5. One of the things they brought out |
|
was that many of the women who do this have been sexually abused as children. If they have experienced incest as a child they have a lower barrier to becoming a prostitute.

I don't really think this is an easy thing for most women to do. They focus on the money.

9. In many countries in Europe, sex work is legal |
|
and prostitution can be a career choice.
You don't see workers huddled around on street corners in skimpy clothes. These workers take annual vacations if they want.
I think that in some countries these workers have to be licensed or certified or join some type of union, regular physicals and keep a list of clients they have seen so they can be contacted is there is a health issue.
These workers earn money and keep ALL of the money they earn except for what they pay in taxes. These workers invest their money, pay their bills and rent on time. Hell, eventually, they retire!
I'm not an ANARCHIST by any means, but I believe that some laws/rules create more problems than they solve.

14. Same thing here, malaise. |
|
Most women do not choose this life and it's not liberating for them. Quite the opposite, despite what some would have us believe. And greedy young women who sell their bodies for bling, whether as "hos" or in other ways, are just missing the boat.

But my wife couldn't handle watching any more of it so she switched it to "Frazier".

4. It didn't need to be 2 hours. |
|
By the end they were talking about women who were basically selling themselves at really cheap rates, who were basically giving sex to get drugs for their drug habits. It was awful.

It starts out as a young Diane breaks in the mediawhore knee-pads at the knees of Richard Nixon and moved on to Raygun worship and booosh worshiping. Do we get to see the nice house and cars and lifestyle she's enjoyed while shoveling propaganda for her various corporate masters?
I think one of the most overused and overdone undercover "stories" is the hooker/teenager gone wrong story. Unforutnately it happens in every city and its shocking, but a sign of our times and various cultures.

16. I thought of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie |

giving away 4 million dollars to charity last year. I wonder if Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols gave away to charity last year. Oh wait, that would be getting involved with the story if you gave a hooker $2O so she didn't have to do 4 bjs for it.
