Fired US Attorney Details GOP Effort to “Cage” Votes in New Mexico in 2004

By Jason Leopold

The Justice Department issued a directive to every US attorney in the country to find and prosecute cases of voter fraud in their states during the height of hotly contested elections in 2002, 2004, and 2006, even though evidence of such abuses was extremely thin or non-existent, a former federal prosecutor says in a new book. .... Justice: Inside the Scandal that Rocked the Bush Administration, an early copy of which I obtained last week. The book is scheduled to be published in June.

Iglesias was one of nine US attorneys who were fired in December 2006 for reasons that appear to be based entirely on partisan politics. His name was added to a list of US attorneys selected for dismissal on Election Day in November 2006.

Earlier this month, Congress filed a civil lawsuit against Joshua Bolten, President Bush's chief of staff, and Harriet Miers, the former White House counsel, in an attempt to compel them to testify before Congress about the White House's role in the US attorney firings and to turn over documents to a congressional committee. Miers and Bolten were subpoenaed by Congress to testify last year but Bush refused to allow their testimonies citing executive privilege.

4. That may not happen with a change of power in DC.
IIRC, there were a lot of grads of fundy law schools hired into DOJ career positions during Dubya's tenure. Those folks could be there for decades.

6. I doubt they'd be all that comfortable given the new management
Btw, too bad about Nate Clay, huh? He's looking for a new place to broadcast. I miss him on the air these days.

7. You'd think that Nate could get a similar gig at Chicago's progressive station, WCPT 820.
Most of their weekend line-up is "best of ..." stuff.

5. The "hook" headline is a stretch. "Caging" was not done by USAs!!
Plus, Scoop ?? .... nonetheles, there is a lot of info in the piece.

It is interesting that Iglesias seemingly sees a larger pattern at work to set up more caging. The NM detail are MUST READ.

10. Jason Leopold = Project Censored award investigative story related to Halliburton's work in Iran
Jason Leopold is the author of the National Bestseller, "News Junkie," a memoir. Visit www.newsjunkiebook.com for a preview. He is also a two-time winner of the Project Censored award, most recently, in 2007, for an investigative story related to Halliburton's work in Iran. He was recently named the recipient of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s Thomas Jefferson Award for a series of stories he wrote that exposed how soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have been pressured to accept fundamentalist Christianity. Leopold is working on a new nonprofit online publication, expected to launch soon.

From the article URL.

11. How many journalistic awards have YOU won?
I don't think Jason Leopold worries about what some anonymous message board poster thinks...

As for credibility, barking dogs have more credibility than your posts. At least people can determine what the dogs are barking about most of the time...

The article stands on its own merits, I say!

Reading it first, then commenting, helps a LOT.

Your defense of Jason is Noble but Jason has kind of shot himself in the foot around this neck of the woods.
