In light of the US media's latest misinformation/propaganda campaign against Venezuela and President Chavez coming from both the left and the right, I wanted to post this video.
I have noticed that the latest efforts to discredit Chavez have been targeting America's left -- by falsely proclaiming that his social programs are not working and his support is falling among the poor due to crime and food shortages. Obviously there are problems, but this video should put the proper context on those problems. And if you're not convinced by the video, this report by the
Center for Economic Policy Research should give you and idea as to the solidness of the Venezuela economy, which
just reached a record low unemployment rate.
These coincide with prior attacks that Chavez limits freedom of the press and consolidates power within his own government. While the former is ridiculous and laughable to anyone who has ever been to Venezuela -- the private media is still in full force there and attacks Chavez and calls him a Nazi on air practically every second -- the latter is true basically because the right-wing opposition in Venezuela has repeatedly refused to participate in its democracy. The Pilger video should give you a good idea as to the realities of this. Also,
this book by Bart Jones is absolutely wonderful, should you decide you are further interested in this situation.
The US, through it's anti-Chavez rhetoric, is paving the way for a more hostile and aggressive foreign policy towards Chavez. It's using Colombia's joke documents to cast Venezuela as a state that sponsors terrorists, but --
as Greg Palast has reported -- the documents are worthless and say nothing of the sort.
Who knows what future nonsense and gibberish our government will drum up in the future about Venezuela. If the Iraq war fails, we're going to need oil somewhere else. It wouldn't surprise me if they were setting the stage for invasion of Venezuela or another coup attempt or assassination or something. It seems unlikely that we would cause more turmoil in another oil-producing state, but in 2000 if someone told me we would invade Iraq, I would not have believed them.
