Buenos Aires-- A tornado derailed an Argentine train that was taking 600 passengers from Rosario to Tucuman. It overturn the cars on the track, and injured 48 persons. Eight of the victims were reported seriously hurt.
January 10, 1973
The Buenos Aires Herald reported that 54 people were killed and 350 injured as a tornado cut a 300 yard-wide swath through the town of San Justo, 300 miles northwest of Buenos Aires. This early summer (in the southern hemisphere) tornado damaged or destroyed 500 homes. In the last report that I could find, seven people were still "near death". Several homes were said to have "vanished" and huge trees flew like matchsticks. Four people were seen falling to their death from a car, as it passed by, 30 feet in the air. In this same province, a tornado injured 48 people when it overturned railroad passenger cars on November 22, 1951. A report from Brazil stated that a tornado killed 10 people on October 9, 1984 (early spring) in this same area.
October 9, 1984
A report from Brazil stated that this early spring tornado killed 10 people about 1,100 miles SW of Rio de Janeiro at Maravilha. This location is actually in Argentina, in the same area as the January, 1973 event.
November 25, 1985
This tornado cut a 25 mile path. One person was killed at Dolores.
A cluster of tornado activity seems to be in Uruguay, northern Argentina and southwestern Brazil.
