You think 'smoke' in Iraq is odd? :wtf: Not anymore it's not. It's the norm. :(
Think bombs and explosions and people's limbs on fire as they fly across the road.
:puke:

And it's called "gallows humor." Not to everybody's taste, and I'm sorry if you were offended.

That boy has just got the Golden Touch, doesn't he?
In a previous life, he may have been the Mayor of Pompeii.

14. I remember flying missions during the rice field burn-off season in Viet Nam. |
|
Horizontal visibility .. zilch. Vertical visibility .. near the same. I had to shoot a low-fuel low-visibility (1/2 mile haze-smoke) emergency approach into Nha Trang one day with the GCA (ground-controlled-approach) down. We put a radio operator on the bomb-sight (which we used for position updates) to watch for the edge of mountainous Hon Tre island as we passed over it on the NDB (ADF) non-precision approach to Nha Trang. Once past Hon Tre, we descended to 200' over the water (minimum descent altitude was 600' .. but this was an emergency!). When the radio op spotted Nha Trang beach through the bomb-sight, we descended a little more and then spotted the beautiful runway at 12 o'clock in perfect position for a landing! Had we not seen the runway by the time we crossed the beach road, I was going to do a steep-climbing course reversal (to stay out of the mountains to the west of Nha Trang) back out to cross Hon Tre again and ditch in the South China Sea.
I took the radio/bomb-sight operator (who was an enlisted man) and the rest of the crew to the officers club where we proceeded to reduce our own personal visibilities in an alcoholic haze and thick cigarette smoke.
Talk about Fox-Uniform!
