19. As long as one stays out of GDP, it's the same as it ever was.
In other words, a stellar source for news. The cesspool that is GDP is only one part of this place and a part, that for me, has been pretty effectively quarantined. The only times I end up in there is when I click on a front page item or step in to see what Nance Greggs has to say and I remove myself quickly. Nasty place, that.

3. I would be more impressed if
the "most viewed last 7 days" had more than 726 hits.

But I guess we're in an "any publicity is good publicity" situation. So it's better than a kick in the head.

7. The message that the MSM
should be getting from that is that their partisanship, attempts to control the message, out right lying and distortion by omission is causing them to become irrelevant.

15. Welcome to DU...
I often hear something on the news and realize that I've been following the story for a week or more here on DU. The downside is that often there are important nuances that are left unreported leading to a rise in my blood pressure.

18. Um. Not to rain on our parade...
I like DU as much as anyone here and do get a lot of my news here. However, doesn't anyone see the irony that a blog is announcing the emergence of blogs overtaking traditional news services? And a blog I have never seen before too but maybe I am the only one who is not familiar witht this PRLog group?

Welcome to DU, btw. :hi:

You can submit your press releases at no charge. All of their services are free.

This just in from PRLog: Zywiec is number one source of female pleasure in the western world.

It's true, it's on the internets and has a PRLog press release!

26. Yeah, I noticed the irony and two years ago, I would have pointed and laughed,
or to quote one of our fellow DUers, I would have said that the net needs to just get over its bad self. But the fact is, in the last two years, we have become the 1000 lb gorilla and short of a destruction of the system, we will be the destruction of the other system and hooray for that. People often talk of Gore or Edwards, Clinton or Obama as our "one true hope!" Not. It's the Net that is our one true hope to save this country and this planet. I didn't see that two years ago but I do now, so while ironic, it's not surprising that the Net is where you get this announcement from - you don't think the "mainstream" presstitutes are going to mention that they are losing, do you?

36. The net has done great things for our democracy.
We need to defend our ability to use it freely. I completely agree. Love the peeps you mention... but without this baby, we wouldn't be able to discuss this and so many other vital topics to our survival as a country would we?

And somehow I still have that knee jerk expectation that the MSM will come back someday and do some actual reporting about how the blogs saved their sorry a**es.

20. The Paragraph

There is also a push towards discussion boards like political site Democratic Underground or “DU.” One of the largest in the country, DU offers numerous discussion categories for every topic imaginable and they are open to on the spot discussion. They do provide moderators to ensure that topics remain civil, accurate and newsworthy. But, for the most part DU is a complete news source for the Democratic population.

Note that Free Republic is not named, although there is no reason it couldn't be for Republicans what DU is for Democrats.

The reason that DU succeeds where FR fails is that a wider range of viewpoints is presented here. Jim Robinson does not tolerate viewpoints that stray widely from his own, which makes FR more of an echo chamber than a discussion forum. At DU, on the other hand, the DLC supporter has to defend his position against Marxists and anarchists, and vice versa, to say nothing of all points in between. There is no POV that won't be challenged here by someone to one's left or right or both (just not far right).

If we did allow all viewpoints, and I'm not saying we should, it would be what democracy would look like. No one should assume he has all the answers, and the more people who chime in the fuller picture is drawn. Yes, that means putting up with an awful lot of nonsense, too, and we get that at DU from Hillary haters, haters for Hillary, and many who have never heard a CT that he couldn't believe.

That is why DU works.

29. Hmm...
I like that we are becoming more influential but I'm not so sure about overtaking traditional news. Ironically, we often refer to corporate news services and cite their work for verification of our points. I think it's becoming a more two way street. They no longer just spew out their half-assed stories. We are influencing them as much (hopefully more) they influence us.

35. I read a lot of blogs, but most are devoted to just a few stories a day.
DU is unique because of LBN....we have 1000's posting stories/links as they occur. Then, we get instant commentary and community based prioritization, so the most important stories float to the top. All in all, I think DU is the best news-blog on the nets.
