Defeated democrat opts for early out from Congress - Al Wynn
Wynn to resign from Congress in June
Representative, who lost primary, will become a partner in Washington law firm

By David Nitkin | Sun reporter
8:54 PM EDT, March 27, 2008

WASHINGTON - Rep. Albert R. Wynn of Maryland, a veteran Democrat who lost a primary last month, said Thursday that he plans to resign from Congress in June to join a high-profile Washington law firm with an active lobbying practice. Wynn will join the growing number of politicians moving through the revolving door between Congress and lucrative careers influencing the decisions of former colleagues.

Wynn, 56, lost his re-election bid to Donna Edwards, a party activist and outspoken critic of the Iraq War. The heavily Democratic district he represents contains portions of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. Edwards came close to defeating Wynn two years ago and bested him in a rematch last month by portraying him as too closely aligned with business interests and the Bush administration.

In a statement, Wynn said that it was a "great honor" to have served the 4th District but said that "it is time to move into another phase of my life."

Under Maryland law, Gov. Martin O'Malley must decide within 10 days of Wynn's resignation whether to call for a special election or to allow the position to remain vacant until a replacement is chosen in November's regularly scheduled general election.

"It just happened so quickly we haven't had time to run the constitutional traps on that one," the governor said Thursday.

Bye Al, ya corrupt fucker. Don't let the door hitcha in the ass on yer way out.

I think Gov. O'Malley should appoint Edwards to take the rest of his term since the seat will be hers next year.

1. they'd have to schedule a special election
the governor can't appoint a rep, only a senator

Let's get Donna started early! I had the privilege of meeting her at Take Back America. She's great and I look forward to her being in Congress.

Oops! I see from the other posts he can't appoint her. Too bad.

Her defeating Wynn was one of our primary's highlights for me.

Maybe even **the** highlight.

7. I sure do

I'm just upset that the candidate whose campaign I was working on, dropped out because it was impossible to compete with the DCCC/MDP-backed candidate they put up against her in the primary despite the fact that she nearly won two years ago. I'd love to have seen her in Congress with Donna and Darcy Burner. Well, we'll see what happens in November -- maybe she'll get another shot in 2010. Kevorkian has entered the race as an independent and could make things interesting. He'll probably pull some votes, but I don't know if it will be enough to screw things up for the Dem candidate.
