The Democratic party has built an 8-1 advantage over the GOP's main apparatus. Comments House minority leader John Boehner on the party's fundraising: "It stinks."

Exclusive: 'NYT' This Sunday Probes 'The End of Republican America'
Posted March 28, 2008 | 10:21 AM (EST)

The cover story of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine asks the provocative question: "The End of Republican America?" The photo below it shows a red, inflatable elephant - collapsed and leaking air.

"Karl Rove had a plan to realign American politics for generations. Now GOP leaders are struggling to prevent another 1964," reads the rest of the cover tag. The article was penned by Benjamin Wallace-Wells, who also writes for Rolling Stone.

Ken Mehlman, the former party chairman, says in the massive piece, "What is concerning is that we lost ground in every one of the highest-growth demographics" in 2006. "If there are Republicans out there who think that 2006 was a year that could be changed by a few votes in a few districts," he adds, "they need to wake up."

................

Many more Republicans than Democrats are stepping down this year, making it almost impossible for the GOP to make gains, the article relates. The influential Cook Political Report offers an even worse assessment, projecting that 12 of the 14 seats most likely to change hands now belong to Republicans. But Cole sees fully 75 seats in play and feels John McCain at top of ticket will help in many.

1. This just encourages complacency.
We are still in Iraq and Pelosi & Reid seem inept to properly wield any legislative majority.

4. I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but
after the election, will there be an opportunity to elect another Speaker of the House and another Senate Majority Leader? Perhaps people who can get things done?

5. Yes, in fact no election is necessary.
The leadership serves at the pleasure of their respective parties. Because of their power, however, it takes a great deal of discontent (read: courage) to replace them.

7. Yes, and complacency is what got us into the messes of the past 8 years in the first place.
I was lecturing my students on complancency well before the 2000. All my fears were well founded.

2. Not until there is a wooden stake through the body or it's exposed to full sunlight.

3. Recently I heard sunlight has no affect. Maybe
that's why even with all the exposure the monster has kept going.

I'm with you a stake in the heart, and I recommend driving it there via the anus.

8. So many House gains were
through gerrymandering that when people awakened to the reality that there is no substance to Republicanism it could fall like a house of cards.

Karl Rove likes to point out that Democratic gains in 2006 were based on 70,000 votes nation wide. Those 70,000 aren't coming back, and it will be more difficult to rig elections this time in many areas.

9. These articles announced the 'demise' of the GOP bother me. I think we will find the GOP
to be a fierce enemy in the fall.

11. 1994 over a hundred seats changed hands
It is no wonder Democrats have been timid this last decade, they took a beating that is hard to imagine. They have been hesitant to do much because of the terrible beating the Democratic Party took. When America says in no uncertain terms they don't like what you are doing you better change your ways...They did and now America will give them a second chance..This time when it comes to National Health Care the Democrats better damn well do something. Clinton was elected mainly on the Health Care issue and Democrats crapped out on him. They were thrown out on their asses. They better have learned..
