GOP White House hopeful John McCain was all smiles the other day when he accepted the endorsement of Nancy Reagan. But there was a time when she gave McCain the Ice Queen treatment. McCain's friend ship with Nancy and Ronald Reagan spans 30 years. The Reagans treated McCain and his first wife, Carol, like family after the Vietnam POW returned home following five years in captivity. Carol became close with Nancy and landed a job at the White House.
But McCain's split with his wife "caused a change in our relationship," McCain admits in his memoir, "Worth the Fighting For." McCain said the first lady was "particularly upset with me and treated me on the few occasions we encountered each other after I came to Congress with a cool correctness that made her displeasure clear." By comparison, he said the Gipper continued to treat him with his "typical courtesy and good humor." Fortunately, McCain said, he "recovered" his friendship with Nancy and the fallout is ancient history. They remain close friends. McCain has been happily married to his second wife, the former Cindy Hensley, for 28 years.
