Iraq: South African mercenary deaths on the rise

A South African citizen was killed in Iraq this week, the department of foreign affairs said on Thursday.

The department declined to release the name of the man, who died on Wednesday.

Details of the incident were also not immediately available, said spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa.

The victim's family had been informed and the department would help send his body back to South Africa.

At least 23 South African contractors have been killed in the country since January 31, 2004, according to the website icoalition.org.
